Woken by jet aircraft.... REJOICE!

< Newer | Older >

One view I long to see again for real...the way to the famous balcony half way along the south-east ridge...and the south summitWe heard last night that the Chinese might be summitting, and as soon as I was woken around 6.oo by persistent jet aircraft noises, I knew they must have done it. More a relief than anything. It's since been confirmed on the news, and no doubt some of you have seen the film footage, apparently quite spectacular.

So, it looks like action down here at last. It seems the first group of our climbers are going up to camp two tomorrow, with a view to subsequently moving to three, but not actually staying there. Then they will come down to BC, rest a few days, then hopefully up for the summit!
We will be following a few days behind, all being well.
I'm not sure about the strategy of NOT sleeping at camp three that first time. It's a compromise, that saves a day when time is shorter than usual, but feels a bit scanty on the acclimatising front without it. I'll think about it.

There's been quite a change of gear in everybody's thinking today. It's refreshing, at last, though a bit muted for our little sub-group, as we aren't expecting to rush up yet etc.
I'm very aware that as it stands, our likely summit date is around 25th May, giving the Sherpas from the first bid time to recover. That doesn't leave much margin of error with any poor weather at that time. Ah the joys of trying to climb Everest. So much uncertainty in so many areas.

I gave a brief interview to the ITN team today, some of which might reach the news broadcast today/tonight, so watch out. Andre spoke to them as well.

Paul, thanks for all that detailed info on the Chinese situation on the north...really interesting.
Ruth I'm sorry to hear you are struggling at the moment, what can I say? Hopefully S.E. will find a way to help.
Wendy, really good to hear from you, thanks for your kind words. I can't check out your daughter's blog from here as unfortunately we have no web access really, but when I get home.....!

Responses from Greg:
Hi Barbara, thanks for the message from yourself and the team, things look a bit brighter here now that the Chinese have apparently summited. Mike, Ray and myself are probably part of the second team within our group, so hopefully we will be moving up in the next few days. Please thank everyone including our patients for their support, it means a great deal. Si, look forward to running up Winter Hill when I return if I have any energy left! Best wishes, Greg.

Hi Darling, things look like they are about to start again. With the Chinese summiting today the first wave of climbers are moving up tomorrow. Not sure when our turn will be but i'd rather wait and avoid the rush. The throat will be sore until I get to Kathmandu, it's something I have to put up with at altitude. Lot's of love Ray X X X

Hi Guy's thanks for the update. I hope RK can attract the right players for next season. We shall be moving back up the hill shortly, we can't wait to get back into the climbing instead of lazing around Base Camp. Hopefully our summit attempt will come soon and then I can have a bath and some decent food! Ray.

Thanks again for you're messages. Glad you had a good weekend, we done nothing but eat, talk, play cards and sleep. Why do I do this again?
Hopefully we shall be climbing again and getting ready for our summit attempt very shortly. Fingers crossed we shall all be home shortly after a successful climb and we shall be celebrating with a slice of rice and a few drinks. Ray

Hi Dave. Sorry I did not get to see you before leaving the UK. As usual I was not organised in time. Still we can have a few beers when I get back. One thing about putting messages on this site, you cannot mention good food or going out for a drink! It's not fair. The weather is not too bad at BC but it's the weather on the summit that dictates when we can have our summit attempt. Hopefully it will not be too far away now. Love to the family. Ray

Chinese Scaffolding

As far as I can make out from the various reports, the Chinese employed enough "climbers" [many of whom seem to have been college students with ltd experience] to allow them to stand on each other's shoulders and pass the torch hand to hand up the mountain. Plus, how did it get from Tibet to Shenzen in under 12 hours?
Hope the way is now clear and success within your grasp.
KEEP DRINKING
Personally I'm going up High Street tomorrow: still feels like a challenge!

Just watched the Chinese

Just watched the Chinese summit - you must be so glad to be finally getting your chance - it will be much more exciting watching you summit than the Chinese and the torch! We hope the weather stays kind for you and you stay well and safe. I finished "at the mill" yesterday for my holiday - we are off to Scotland on Sunday and won't have internet access - thank goodness we didn't book our holiday around the 25th!! Look forward to catching up on all your news when we get back. Good luck to you all. Janet & Paul

Quietly supporting you all the way!!

Hi Mike, it's Norman, Jane, Mark and Jonathan sending your our very best wishes of continuing love and support in your quest to achieve your lifelong dream!! Having just watched the news coverage of the "so called Chinese summit" we are appalled at the, what we consider to be, the belittling of the huge endeavour that is required to summit the top of the world!! The sheer guts and physical challenge that is involved has not come through in the smiling faces and "party atmosphere" that has been portrayed in the images that have been broadcast throughout the world!! I consider it an absolute travesty to the daily risks, dangers and impact that the attempt is having on your body!! It is an absolute insult to the hundreds who have sought their ultimate prize and have died in the attempt!! Go Mike Go!!! We and so many others from all around the world are willing you to make this your year!! We continue to wish you all our love and very best of wishes as you get closer and closer to your goal!! God speed!! With all our love bruv!!! Your the man!!

Here goes!

Great to see that hurdle of the chinese bid out of the way and
so pleased to see your bid can get some momentum up again.
Loads of people are following your progress so keep the blog up as much as you can.
Summers arrived here.. barbeques and bike rides. Sat out in a T shirt tonight drinking tea at 10pm in the garden. What a contrast with BC. Saw some footage on ITN (not your interview, at least on the bit I watched) and felt little envy I have to say!
Keep well and positive Mike... the eyes of Kendal are upon you!

Great news, Mike

Hi Mike~

Haven't posted since you arrived to EBC but I've been following along. Great news that the Chinese summited and now you can focus on the task at hand. I am wishing you a safe journey to C-3 (would be nice if you could spend the night). Enjoy the views and climb safe, climb strong! Good luck with the weather.

Best,
m.c. reinhardt

Get on up!

Hi Mike
Greetings from sunny Cumbria (well at least it was for the last 2 days!). Glad to hear that the Chinese on the north will be out of the way. Best now just to crack it and be home in time for Pimms, cricket and all other things English by early June. Good luck and be well!
