As things stand, Ray, Greg, Nadir and myself are setting off around 4.30 a.m. tomorrow morning for camp two...en route, we hope, for our first, and hopefully final summit attempt.
I hope that sounds good to you. If not, you shouldn't be reading this!!
Apparently there were many summits this morning, but the rumour mill is so unreliable here that YOU are better placed at home than us here to check on the details published on sites like "Explorer's Web" or Everestnews.com.
There is talk of around 100, which sounds a touch high for a first night when the final ridge was still to be fixed with rope, but let's see!
The more the better from our viewpoint, as it means less of a crowd in a few days time when we hope to go for the top.
Weather news:
Like all weather forecasts, each daily prediction for Everest can alter somewhat, compared to previous ones, and ours is a bit more unstable than we'd like. Henry is clearly very experienced at making sense of them all, and we ARE going up as planned, which tells you something, and his ideal has me summitting on the morning of the 27th, after a full night's sleep on the col on the 25th...i.e. NOT setting off on the night of arrival there, as we did in 2006. Henry has expressed a strong view that we stay together at the col, with all of us sleeping over the first night at the col. Ray and Greg are stronger than me always, and I think they'd prefer to go on the same night etc, but we have agreed currently to stay together.
There is clearly a chance that the weather will intervene, and we may be delayed, which is not a great thought. I will hang on as long as I'm allowed, though it's messy for work, but the others are less sure of that idea. Let's just hope....
Today I've felt pretty tired, trying to rehydrate really, and then pack for tomorrow's load through the icefall. Why does the bag always weigh more than we expect? We have a lot of snacks.
I've been working on battery charging, but as only two of the original four pda batteries are any use, we will have to try and keep updates briefer, and any message responses will also have to be general or short, I'm afraid. We can't know for sure how long we'll be up there, and what with the extra cold temperatures, battery life is short.
I'll probably do some audio-blogs instead, if possible, though some of you may perhaps not be able to hear them?
Perhaps my friend Harry, the site moderator, can add a short summary in text for those who can't hear what I've said?
Now I've got to get EVERYTHING together over the next few days, absorb the pain, eat as best I can, plod my way up slowly, without panicking, and hope for the best. Sounds easy enough? Just try it!
This is the moment? Well nearly.
Messages:
Bill R, thanks for a nice message...I take your point!
Ian S, as you say, there's not too much enjoyment now visible, but afterwards, ah there's the time to savour perhaps? I hope to see you in a short while!
Jackie, Thanks for those lovely thoughts, I'm glad you've felt so involved. Here's hoping it ends the right way.
Audrey D, thank you for travelling this far with me, and cousin Gerry too, along with
dear Ken and Shirley. I'm not that boy you remember any more, far from it. I wish mum could have seen my efforts.
Shanda, and Graham W, I hope when you get to check on me next it's all done and dusted for me. Thanks for following me thus far.
Please bear with me over the next week or so, if the site goes a bit chaotic etc. It's tricky up there.
GOOD LUCK AGAIN
TO SCOTT AND ANGUS WHO ARE UP THERE SOMEWHERE!
Lastly, another little music suggestion for around summit day...."This is the moment", sung yet again by my beloved Moody Blues, on the "bonus disc" from the compendium called "Time Traveller". I hope at least someone tracks it down, because it's THE song for that day...I hope.
Responses from Greg; Hi Si, great to see you message matey, thanks for the advice about chicken and chips, the latest news in 'ground unicorn weekly' is that it is only useful for running up moel famau, so I will stick with the chicken. Please let me know how the 'mighty Leeds' get on, did they get any points back? Thank you for passing on all the well wishes, it means a lot, please thank them all. Best wishes for now, see ya soon, Greg.

Hi Darling it was great to talk today, I look forward to my pasties! Things have already changed since we talked, we still go to camp 4 on the 25th but we are now going to spend a whole day there and now go for the summit on the 26th. Hoping to summit in the early hours of the 27th. I still plan to text you from each camp to let you know i'm ok. Greg and I plan to go all the way back down to camp 2 from the summit if we feel up to it. So don't worry if you do not hear from me for a while after summiting.
See you in 2 weeks, all my love Ray.
The Lambs
Hi peeps. Well it's all about to kick off, we head up tomorrow looking at summiting on the 27th. So far the weather looks better than 2004 so fingers crossed. I can't wait for this to be done then a few beers in Kathmandu followed by the flight home. It's been a long time away this time or is it just me getting older? See you all in a couple of week's Ray.

Kepp the messages coming
Paul Adler — Wed, 05/21/2008 - 22:40Just in case there is any confusion, it doesn't use up more of their batteries to download your messages, so don't feel like you need to hold back in order to help them conserve power. Right now is when the guys really need your support!
Paul.

Visitor — Wed, 05/21/2008 - 13:54All the best for the big push to the summit, my friend. I guess you won't be drinking on your birthday, so I'll have extra in your honour! Adelaide sends her regards, too. Looking forward to hearing about your latest adventure in person on your return. It is fascinating reading your team's progress. Good luck to all. John
Big Match on Tonight
Jim Gardner — Wed, 05/21/2008 - 14:16Mike,
There's a big match of footie on in Moscow tonight (as I know you know) but it's not as exciting as what you're doing. Like everyone else, I guess, I'd like to send you the inspirational message that makes the difference and gets you to the top. Sadly I don't think I'm up to that and I recognise that loads of factors need to combine to make the trip a success. Anyway, I'm sure you know that LOADS of people are thinking about you and even though we know that the power of prayer doesn't appear to work in clinical trials it is surely good to feel that our hopes are really with you. We want you to win! Go on son, Jim.
Hi Ray
Caz — Wed, 05/21/2008 - 14:17Just been getting the update, how exciting is it now. The rumours are correct it's on the BBC website about the first lot of climbers reaching the summitt. So here's hoping the weather behaves and you keep to schedule. Me, Paul and Steph are off to Leeds on Saturday to see the Kaiser Chiefs. Well me and Steph are. Paul is driving us there and back, he doesn't like them and we're at a birthday party at the local rugby club on Sunday afternoon, so we'll probably be sporting hangovers on Monday, well Paul will without a doubt. It'll be a "never again" job for the millionth time ha ha!!!! Nothing much to report now the football is finished. We're not interested in tonights game, we don't like either team. Take care and keep strong and safe. Lot of love Claire & Paul xxxx
This is the Moment...
Mary Clare Reinhardt — Wed, 05/21/2008 - 14:45Mike, great song choice for summit day! Here are the lyrics:
THIS IS THE MOMENT
By the Moody Blues~
This is the moment
This is the day
This is the moment
When I know I'm on my way
Every endeavor
I have made ever
Is coming into play
Is here and now today
This is the moment
This is the time
When the momentum and
The moment are in rhyme
Give me this moment
My precious chance
I'll gather up my best
And make some sense at last
This is the moment
When all I've done
All of the dreaming
Scheming and screaming
Becomes one
This is the day
Just see it shine
When all I've lived for
Becomes mine
This is the moment
This is the hour
When I can open up
Tomorrow like a flower
And put my hand to
Everything I planned to
Fulfil my grand design
See all my stars align
This is the moment
My final test
Destiny beckoned
I never reckoned
Second best
I won't look down
I must not fall
This is the moment
The sweetest moment of them all
This is the moment
So damn all the odds
This day or never
I'll sit forever with the gods
When I look back
I will recall
Moment for moment
This was the moment
The greatest moment of them all
Best of Luck

Tina Redmond is Seattle, Washington, USA. Just want to let you know we have been following your updates and this morning as we read can feel a tiny bit of the excitement you must be feeling. We wish you the best of luck and weather and pray for a safe trip up and back down again. Do your best no more no less.
Cheers!
The Redmond Family
Good luck
Simon E — Wed, 05/21/2008 - 16:11Mike - You are banned from mentioning work in your blog until you are next below BC. WE ARE FINE! Ilike the sound of the plan for the ascent. My first and enduring memories of your description of your last attempt were of you getting no sleep and little fluid at the S Col. So here's your prescription:
H2O - bucketloads ; O2 - continuous ; ZZZZ - At least 8hrs.
Latest news of other sites supports the rash of summitting and suggests it is ongoing. SO many people are behind you mate. Add your name to that successful list!
Cheers
Simon
Best wishes for the big summit push
hughtooby — Wed, 05/21/2008 - 16:58Hi Mike,
Sorry we never got out for that training walk in the Lakes before you left for Everest - hopefully see you when you get back.
Caroline (Hett) has passed me details of this website - neat idea.
Just wanted to pass on best wishes for the next few days - hope weather and fitness conspire to allow you to be "third time lucky"! I'll be following your progress with great interest. David and I are thinking of you.
Best regards,
Hugh

Soosoo — Wed, 05/21/2008 - 18:41Hi Ray and team,
I'm back in Sunny South Shields and catching up once again with your progress. Thinking of you all and praying your goal is achieved with you all safe and well. Saw ITN news and interview with Ran. It all looked so amazing and I felt quite emotional!!!!! You have so much support , I hope this strengthens the endurance and willpower you so obviously have. Take the greatest of care. Luv Susan

The Best
newhighcb — Wed, 05/21/2008 - 19:27Hi Dr. B,
I've followed your progress every day with much excitement, but may miss your reports from 22-25th as I'll be in the southern uplands of Scotland, but I hope to have mobile reception and anyway you will be in my thoughts. As you recommended I'm starting with easy walks and last week went up Gummers How. That felt SO good.
I remember your reports of lack of sleep last time. You have the ability and now the right plan for the summit. Go get it! I'll be online for your final push.
You're the best doctor I or anyone could wish for. You deserve to stand on top of the world.
Safe journey and good luck.
Colin Brown
Go for it Mike - we are so
paul-janet — Wed, 05/21/2008 - 22:36Go for it Mike - we are so excited and praying for a safe and successful summit for you. We'll be on top of the world with you (well in spirit anyway!!) when you make it. Can't think of anything more magical to say - so many of us want to see you at the top! Take care and keep safe. love Janet (&Paul) x
Like your approach
Paul Adler — Wed, 05/21/2008 - 22:36Hi Mike,
I really like the sound of your plan of staying on the South Col a night. At C2 you have 71% of the mountain above you (compared with BC), yet most people attempt to climb all this way to the summit without a rest day; myself included. A rest at C4 will increase your safety and chances of success no end. Ray & Greg will thank you for making them rest too & I know I wish I did this myself last year.
Scott and Angus have made it to the top and are back at C4.
Regards, Paul.
Best of luck and happy birthday
JOHWIL — Wed, 05/21/2008 - 22:42Best of luck to you all. Happy birthday to Greg on Friday - don't waste your breath on blowing the candles out !
John
We are all behind you.
hpspeel — Thu, 05/22/2008 - 08:47Your blog is getting well over 300 hits per day and rising. If it helps, I will of course ensure any voice messages you leave on here are also displayed as text - no problem. Willing you on. Harry
PS Man U 1, Chelsea 1 after extra time. Man U won 6-5 on pens. Anelka's final pen saved by Van de Saar. Earlier, Terry's penalty could have won it for Chelsea
We're all with you!
Alison.Bloxham — Thu, 05/22/2008 - 11:57Hi Mike
Just to let you know how much we are all behind you at home! Was at a lecture by Doug Scott last night at the Brewery so Everest very much in mind! Nearly bought you a picture of the summit but then thought that might be tempting providence! Fingers and toes crossed for all the luck you need to go with the mental strength you obviously have. Everyone is keeping you in their thoughts and sending positive vibes in abundance! As Oddball said in the Dirty Dozen - "don't give me any negative waves man!!" Keep them away and I hope you can also enjoy the achievement! Alison
