Hi everyone its Paul B with our daily update.

Trek to Everest Base Camp
I was thinking yesterday's climb to Pumori Camp 1 was going to be impossible to top, but today's trek to Everest Base Camp was equally as spectacular.

We were blessed with an even better day than yesterday. Apart from the occasional mountain top clouds, it was sunny and clear all day.

The trek to Everest Base Camp took us primarily along the same route as yesterday, except, at the turn off to Pumori, we continued along the glacier ice flow until we reached Base Camp.

Everest Base Camp
I have no idea how Base Camp could ever exist. The location is a huge space comprised of rocks, boulders and the underlying glacier ice, and nothing more. It's human determination and ingenuity that turns this inhospitable place into a living and working village during climbing season.

We arrived at the last summit attempt for the year was packing ready to leave for the winter. This was the first Thai natonal attempt at the summit and we met and spoke with the climbers on our approach to camp. They made 8000m and were forced back by the bad whether that we also experienced 3-4 days ago, but they will be back!

We spent well over two hours in Camp and were kindly given a flask of tea by the Thai support team. Again many photos and much video was taken of the Camp site, the surrounding mountains and glacier ice.

Ice Fall
We later ventured into the ice fall for our first experience of trekking across pure glacier ice. Not an easy task, but a great experience none the less. We also spent some time scrounging through the ice and rock for any lost or discarded items of interest from previous years.

Dazza had his heart set on finding an ice axe, after Dave's find of one in Antarctica, but had to settle for and oxygen mask from the 70's. I also found a piece of a helicopter that crashed in the area many years ago.

The Near future
After the past 4 very hard and rewarding days (Gokyo Lakes, Gokyo Ri, Pumori Camp 1 and Everest Base Camp) we now face 4 relatively easy/short days as we physically prepare and approach our final major goal of our time in Nepal. Island Peak (6189m)

Cheers for now

Hi Deb
Great to hear from you, its only been 2 weeks, you slack Aussie. You knew my bum would be exposed at some point :) The beard is coming along well but I'm just not to keen on the icicle thing. So I might reneg on that bit. Soz

It has been very to date, mainly due to my lack of proper training, but well worth it. Everywhere we go its more beautiful scenery after another. Finally got to Base Camp today, see my main update for details.

Hope to hear from you before the next two weeks pass. Hope all is well with you and your world in London. Back soon enough.

Cheers
Paul B

Hi Charlie
Great to hear from you.

Soz if I'm making you jealous, you'll make it here one day I'm sure. Just had two fab days Pumori Camp 1 and Everest Base Camp. Lots of photos and video to show for it.

Very weary at the mo, early mornings, long days climbing/trekking etc. but well worth it. Next 3-4 days are easy as we prepare for the climb of Island Peak next Friday or Saturday.

Can't really say I'm missing London too much at present. But I will be back in 2 short weeks. Hope you had a great parade on Sunday.

Cheers
Paul B

Hello all!

Hey Paul B,

It's great to see you all made it to Base Camp in one piece!!
The views from the pics you have uploaded look amazing, I can't imagine how good the rest of them will be...I'll look forward to seeing those!

We went to the Citadels gig last night and as always they were brilliant! New stand in drummer at the moment as Doug is still injured. He put a different twist on a couple of the songs but I'm still preferring the original versions....gotta love the Doug style!! lol
Had a pretty late night as well, as usually happens when you stay at Ant's/ your place....didn't help that I had to be up at 7 to get to Colchester for work (that's the other side of the M25 too!!) lol

Hope all is going well, and you enjoy your few days of resting.
Good luck with reaching the summit, you all seem eager and prepared for it!!
I'll look forward to reading further updates as you climb higher :o)

Take care,
Katy xx

Back at Base Camp

Paul A:

Wow - back at Base Camp! What did it feel like to walk back into camp after less than a year? Was it a bit odd to see it with so few tents? Did you have any serious Everest climbing pangs? I'm really curious if you would ever consider doing it again, to get that "perfect" summit moment?

Thanks for your reply re. your Sherpas and Sherpa friends. My students were curious about schooling for Sherpa children. Are many home-schooled, or do they walk quite a distance to attend school?

Best of luck on your ascent of Island Peak!

Cheers from Canada,

Liane

What an experience

Hi David, the excitement of the journey must be amazing, daily adrenalin rush, looking forward to the experience Rob. PS All over Love Rob & Mum

#1 bro To #4 bro

Well thought i'd better drop a line.
Shelly and the boys wish you the best.
Found any decent snow bunny's yet?
Be good, like i said keep it tucked in or it'll drop off.
Catch you when you get back.
Adam.

Congrats and rest well ~

Great shot from Pumori 1 Camp! Congrats on all of your accomplishments to date. Rest well and enjoy the days ahead as the grand finale of Island Peak awaits you. I was wondering how technical Island Peak is. Is there much glacier travel? Also, do you expect many other teams on I.P.?

Best,
MC

Congrats

Paul B,
Well done! Seems that you have been having a good time. We arrived home from O'Reillys late yesterday and there were 35 emails - which I have not read as yet - so if you have sent us a message over the past week, I have not seen it yet - will read them later when we have time. We had drizzle for most of bird week, but we were able to do all the events. Now we have this week to prepare for the bird week on Lord Howe - we leave early Saturday morning and arrive home on the following Saturday

Hi Paul A

Hey Paul, sounds like you're having a great trip. Hope it's satisfying being back at EBC. Can't believe the others went swimming in Gokyo Lakes (we are just back from hiking round Fraser Island - lakes there were really warm and actually nice to swim in). Good luck on the approach down to Island Peak! Bridge and Chris

Gday

Hey Paul B
Great to hear you're enjoying yourself, certainly would be a rewarding experience. How's the breathing going?
"Weather: - 10 C in our rooms, -18 C outsideat night. Sunny all day." Minus 10. Insane to think it's that cold there. Not quite that cold here but bloody close (it was freezing (seriously - 0 degrees) overnight). Good to see it's sunny as well, surely that would help the climb.
Party - 29th november somewhere in town.
Enjoy it mate, you'll get to the top of island peak, no doubts.

Sorry daddy

hello daddy, sorry you didn't get my email yesterday I didnt press the button at the bottom so it didnot go. I scored 3 goals at my football tournament, but we lost in the semifinals. Also we had to get up at 5am yesterday as we did a carbote sale. Mummy said we would probably only make £10 but we made £45 which we shared with francesca. Got to go and have a shower, not like you. Big kisses and don't get too cold. Call us when y ou can as we haven't talked to you in ages. from Stefano.

Paul B, it's 8:30 AM and I'm sitting here in my office in Brisbane and the AC is not functioning properly and it's a humid 26 degrees inside. I can't imagine the conditions your in, literally the other side of the world. Your pictures and adventure look truly amazing. About all I can talk about is the loss in the Melbourne Cup again and a long wine lunch on Saturday. You're looking pretty thin in the photo's mate, bit different to many years ago...take care and looking forward to hearing about all the adventures first hand

Hi David

We can't believe that you're actually there. The tent picture is great. It sounds freezing cold - hope all your stuff is keeping you warm. Its very warm here, maybe you don''t want to hear that!
Erin says that you've put on weight - you must not be climbing hard emough! She misses you.
We'd love to hear your impressions of base camp, climbing, the mountains - everything. How does it compare with deep sea diving?
We presume you are bro#4 so no more talk of snow bunnies!
We have been very lax with our exercise program - at least P has!
Be careful & don't fall off. You'll soon be preparing for trip down and home. Do you have to lug all that stuff back? Take lots of photos - the brochure looks good!
