Trekking poles leki vs black diamond

The only trekking poles i own are a pair of old (2001) black diamond ascents. aside from the plastic flip lock devices starting to show "splitting cracks" because of the pressure from being tightly closed.. they have been pretty good poles. (my poles were the first from black diamonds trekking pole line so hopefully the flip lock devices have been made stronger since?)

So those have been pretty good for backpacking. i am going to climb mt.rainier this fall and i am looking to update my poles. i guess the main difference between leki and BD is that leki has a twist lock device vs black diamonds flip lock device. somewhere online i read about a climber saying BD poles are more user friendly when wearing gloves compaired to leki. please give me some input on this subject. keep in mind i would also bring these poles on all of my future climbs in different weather. thanks!

I don't like my leki poles

I have a few sets of Leki poles that I used for about 10 years and I find that they are difficult to adjust even without gloves. It feels like the twist mechanism doesn't grab properly. The secret I have found is to not unwind it too much when collapsing, otherwise you need to pull it apart and manually expand the internal spreader mechanism. And then if you don't screw it in tight enough, the pole can collapse if you place pressure on it when descending. (Of course this would be the same with any height-adjustable pole, but I do find that I need to really make it tight in order to stop it 'shrinking'.)
On a trip to Nepal some members bought cheap poles with a flip mechanism and these are were easier to adjust, however they are much heavier than Leki. For me I value weight, so I didn't buy any, and I just leave mine extended for the duration of the trip.

So I wouldn't recommend Leki due to the difficulty of adjusting the length.

Paul.
