My grandma died from Breast Cancer 5 years ago. I was sitting in class and decided to do something in memory of her. Since I love the outdoors so much I decided to bike the Trans-Canada Highway from B.C. to Newfoundland. I realized that I wouldn't be able to complete it all in One summer so i decided to start on the Atlantic Side and work my way to British Columbia. That way I'll finish off seeing the beautiful West Coast. I am planning this trek in the Summer of 2009. I would bike from 8:00am - 6:00pm and avoid hotels and motels and stay only at Campgrounds. I have been told by many people that I wouldn't and can't do it but there are a very few people who are on my support team. I'm currently getting help planning this from my Leadership Camp Counselor. I would be fully sponsored and hopefully having a spotter. My main concern is that I won't find a spotter to spot me all the way through. And Advice on spotters or where and how i can get a spotter would help.
What about not using a support car
Paul Adler — Wed, 06/25/2008 - 23:17Hi lifeinthebush, It sounds like a really great challenge to ride from one side of Canada to the other. Yes, I understand how difficult it will be to get a support car to follow you on such a long journey (is that what you mean by spotter?). But I was wondering if you have thought of doing it without? If you were able to equip your bike with pannier bags, then you should be able to carry everything you needed. Obviously this will weigh you down a bit, but it might be your only option. You could get a very lightweight tent, carry minimal gear, a spanner for your bike and a spare tube with some patches. I reckon its very possible.
Paul.
PS. I am not sure if you have tried to ride a long distance with a backpack on - I have tried it and its not pleasant. Stick with bags on your bike.
