I feel like an astronaut getting ready to leave the earth on a spaceship with everything in countdown mode. Where is my checklist, have I packed enough supplies, will I have what I need ... where is my toothbrush???? Welcome to my whirlwind of activity, but be careful not to get too close as objects may be flying out of control!
All kidding aside, I would like to start off my first entry by thanking Paul and Fi for making this possible. I first met Paul and Fi last year through their blog as they detailed their journey to Mt. Everest, and then their struggles to make it to the top. I was caught up in their emotions, frustrations, and challenges and found myself sending encouraging emails to try and push them to the top. After their return to Australia I called Paul to chat and learned alot about the mountain, and the business of getting to the top. Paul was very helpful then to this total stranger, and has continued to be extremely helpful as I could not be half as prepared as I am had it not been for his help, and friendship :>)
In a week and a half I will be on my way to Kathmandu, Nepal to finish a journey that I started 7 years ago ... to summit the 7 highest mountains on the 7 continents of the world. The seed for this feat was planted in 1993 when I had a successful summit on Mt. Cotopaxi, Ecuador. It has since flourished into the bright, colorful reality of a formidable challenge ... ready for the taking!
I would be remiss if I did not thank my wife Carol for her love, support, and patience over the past 7 years as I traveled from continent to continent, mountain to mountain, and in most cases with little to no communications for
weeks at a time. Carol has helped me to pack (a chore she despises), booked my travel, and even given me an allowance should I want to treat myself (just kidding). Even though she has not physically joined me on the summits (except for Mt. Kiliminjaro ... great job Carol) she is always there with me in spirit. If it had not been for Carol, I would not have had this dream to complete the 7 Summits as she is a part of that dream ... and always with me :>)
I look forward to sharing my experiences, both good and bad, and hope that I can enlighten some of you to the magic of mountain climbing, but more importantly show that if you put your mind and effort into something you really aspire to do, it is attainable ... no matter how high the mountain!

Communications
Patrick — Mon, 03/19/2007 - 12:41Wow ... you would not believe how much work goes in to this communication process. Paul and Fi are absolute wizards when it comes to trouble shooting ... at all hours!
It makes me wonder ... do they ever sleep?
This is a test posting from my pda.
Good luck on your 7th summit!
Mary Clare Reinhardt — Tue, 03/20/2007 - 01:22Hi Pat
I have a basic idea of what it takes to complete a "7 summit project". My brother just completed his on December 17, 2006 summiting Vinson in Antarctica. The preparation and the logistics are challenging in themselves let alone the physical endurance required on some of the "7". I wish you good luck on Everest. mc
7 Summit Project
Patrick — Tue, 03/20/2007 - 02:00Hey MC:
Small world as I just summitted Mt. Vinson on December 22, 2006. I am sure that I passed your brother on the trail. It was a wonderful experience and yes logistically challenging!
Thanks for the best wishes.

Good Luck
CaptDS — Tue, 03/20/2007 - 03:06I still think you are going to Hawaii and taking pictures at a photo shop with a mountain as a backdrop. I have a picture of me when I was on the cover of Rolling Stones.
Seriously, be safe. You are helping the "macho" image of male nurses! :)
Hawaii
Patrick — Tue, 03/20/2007 - 03:38Hey Don:
I may not be going to Hawaii, but know I will be thinking of it during the coldest of cold times! Take care and keep me up to date on school.

Best of luck on your climb on Mt. Kiliminjaro. It is a beautiful experience. The journey getting there was the best as you transition through so many zones of plant and animal life.
I can already feel your energy.

What Next???
Visitor — Tue, 03/20/2007 - 13:59Hey Pat!
I am so excited for you and look forward to following your progress. I printed a map of Everest and possible camp sites so you will have to keep us informed so I know where you are on the mountain. As some one who loves to travel I have a lot of respect for you which encourages me to take on more of what the world has to offer.
I do have one question. What is next on your list after you accomplish this??
God Bless,
Tim Lindamood
Wanderlust ... catch the bug!
Patrick — Wed, 03/21/2007 - 00:58Hey Tim:
Great to hear from you. I promised my wife (Carol) that after this trip we would be going on long hikes and backpacking trips to Colorado and points west as we used to do ... before the 7 Summits.
The world has sooo much to offer and we need to MAKE more opportunities to get out there and explore this beautiful earth. My wife and I both have wanderlust ... which is a desire for travel and adventure. Sounds like you have the bug too ... no antibiotics needed, just time away from work! I look forward to swapping travel stories.
Take care,
Pat :>)
Best wishes for a safe climb!
Sandra D — Tue, 03/20/2007 - 19:23Pat, I'll be following you from sunny Columbia, SC. I can't wait to read all about your experience and live vicariously through your adventures. Stay safe on your trip to Kathmandu and then going up the mountain and down again. We'll be thinking about you and cheering you on here!

I am sending spare red blood cells from our 5280 altitude to help you prepare for your trip - hope they are arriving safely (I have special telepathic abilities). This is a practice run to be sure I am capable of blogging. I will be away from my computer March 29-April 1 - but will send you brain waves and more red blood cells in spirit until I can send you words of wisdom via computer after April 1.
You have my visions of strength and clear thoughts for your climb - no cerebral edema please. WOW - you are really doing this

Red Blood Cell Transfusion
Patrick — Wed, 03/21/2007 - 01:10Hey Bonnie:
I'm ready for the transfusion as long as you start it with a #22 angiocath. You already have excellent blogging skills and look forward to your April entries. My head is already big enough with all the attention that I have received ... no room for edema.

Climbing Mountains
Visitor — Wed, 03/21/2007 - 03:03Hi Pat,
You sound so excited, and thus I'm excited for you. I will pray that you will and your team will return home to your loved ones safely. I will also pray that you will grow spiritually towards God and I hope that in climbing this mountain you will change in a different way than I think you are thinking.
I don't mean to sound so pious, I'm learning and growing slowly myself, but I know it's good and pure and beautiful. It may not impress anyone or very few, but I don't care.
I know this trip means so much to you, and I challenge you to ask God to put His spirit in you and that you grow in a way you never thought possible.
One of my favorite scriptures is:
Those who hope in the Lord will soar like wings on eagles. Isaiah 40:31
I hope you will memorize this and take it with you. I think His words will help you during this trip. Just imagine soaring like wings on eagles, they glide with ease. They are strong and powerful. Eagles fly high, and can capture all the beauty of this earth. I hope you will take my words seriously and lovingly, and I also hope you have fun.
Love you, Deb
PS Say hi to Carol for me.
Soaring like wings on eagles
Patrick — Wed, 03/21/2007 - 18:33Hey Deb:
So great to hear from you and thanks so much for the inspiring words. I will need all of the inspiration, prayers, and well wishes as possible to get me up this hill :>)
I know that this will be a life-changing event and do hope that I can become a better person and help others through my actions. I will be thinking of those eagles wings as I climb and hopefully will be the wind beneath my wings to move me upward.
Take care,
Pat :>)
Eagles wings
Mary Clare Reinhardt — Wed, 03/21/2007 - 21:44Hi Pat
I love eagles; I am privileged enough to see bald eagles from my deck (live in the NW of the US) I wrote a song for Fi and Paul last spring called "Climb On". Thought I would leave you with the lyrics to the Interlude (substituting "he" for "they"):
With all the preparation he had done. It had truly paid off for the time had finally come.
And even though this journey under the sun. Was everything he'd planned for, the real challenge had begun.
The steps that would take him high. Beyond where the eagles fly. Toward the top, near the deep blue sky. (guitar riff)

Climb On
Patrick — Thu, 03/22/2007 - 03:41Hey MC:
Thanks for sharing the eagles story ... have not seen one yet, but look forward to the day :>)
I love the lyrics to the song and very representative of the challenge that lays ahead. I too am hopeful that my preparations will pay off ... but at the moment it seems like I'm not well enough prepared as I have alot of work to do in the next week before I leave. Time is ticking ...
Take care,
Pat :>)
Eagles and Mt. Everest
Mary Clare Reinhardt — Sun, 03/25/2007 - 22:46Hey Pat
I saw a huge bald eagle soaring right over my deck while having coffee this morning. I thought of you and all the climbers attempting Everest this year.
Time may still be ticking but with each tick you are closer to attaining your dream. Good luck!
MC
Closer to the dream ...
Patrick — Sun, 03/25/2007 - 23:58Hey MC:
Wow, what a way to start the day! Thanks for sharing the eagle sighting ... look forward to keeping you updated as I get closer to my dream.
Take care,
Pat :>)
Soaring
Visitor — Mon, 03/26/2007 - 02:58Hi Again Pat,
Are you there yet??? Yes, I had to ask.... Tehee I would assume you would get there early to get over jet lag and stuff.
So there's another Canuck on the team eh?? Where is he from??? It sounds like you live in Colorado now; is that right? Mike and I are planning a trip up there in September. We will be celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary.
Well, I am climbing a mountain of my own in the way of starting a new Palliative Care Program. It's been a challenge and continues to be, but worth it. I will continue to hope in Him.
Take care of yourself, Deb
Still at Home in Columbia, SC
Patrick — Mon, 03/26/2007 - 03:15Hey Deb:
Great to hear from you ... and am still at home in Columbia, SC. I depart on Wednesday 3/28 and after a few days in Delhi, India I will arrive in Kathmandu on 3/31. I am not sure about my other team members, but if you are referring to TA who is climbing Mt. Everest, she is from Newfoundland and on another team.
Carol and I are heading to Colorado in July to do some camping and hiking as we love the beauty of the mountains. What a great place to celebrate your anniversary :>)
Best of luck in starting your new program. I am confident that you will do well as you have great experience, talent, and compassion.
Take care,
Pat :>)
Well-wishes from PHR
Visitor — Thu, 03/22/2007 - 08:19Hi Pat!
I'm not sure if you remember me, I served on a couple of committees with you here at Richland a few years back when you were in the OR (yeah, that long ago!). Since then, I've worked with Sandra Dickson, who's kept up with you and your adventures. I've been cheering for you as long as I've known about your 7-summit goal, and am more excited than ever for you! I've been checking your website regularly, and will be one of the many prayer warriors once you get on Mt. Everest. I've never been in the same room with anyone who's made The Summit before, so this is kind of like finding out you're related to somebody famous! :-)
Once all this is over and your feet are closer to sea level in Columbia, I'd love to talk to you about teaching nursing. Until then, know that we're pulling for you here at Richland! :-)
Allison Turnley
Prayer Warriors
Patrick — Thu, 03/22/2007 - 12:15Hey Allison:
Great to hear from you and thanks for the reassurance of support. I have always considered my colleagues at Palmetto Health Richland as not only friends, but family. As a nursing colleague we enjoy the camraderie that most professionals will never experience as we deal with pain and sorrow, death and dying, and love and friendship on a daily basis through our interactions with patient's and their families. I enjoy the brotherhood/sisterhood of nursing and after 30 years in this profession I have no regrets. It has truly been a blessing to be able to give back to my profession and teach nursing students at USC. I look forward to our conversation regarding teaching ... and getting my feet back down to sea level!
Thanks again for the support and look forward to hearing from you on the mountain.
Take care,
Pat :>)
Wife's comments
Visitor — Thu, 03/22/2007 - 13:21Yes, I've finally listed the blog and it is exciting. Maybe I've been a little bit in denial that you are really leaving. This will be a wonderful tool to keep in touch and help the 2 months fly by. I love you. Can't wait until we resume our travels TOGETHER!
Carol
Travels Together ... Again!
Patrick — Thu, 03/22/2007 - 15:18Dear Carol:
As you well know, and most don't, you have been with me on every summit as I always send my love from the top and thank you for all your support. I have symbolized this process on the 7 Summits by taking with me a small plastic character named Pokey. I am aging myself when I talk about Pokey, but for those of you that are unfamiliar, Gumby and Pokey were two animated characters made of mouldable clay and rather well known on television ... many, many years ago. Pokey is a horse (orange color), and I'm not sure what Gumby is ... other than Gumby (green color).
Many years ago I started to lovingly call my wife "pokey" as I would tell her while hiking that she was "poking along behind me on the trail" as I usually hike at a very rapid pace. I usually did this in jest as she maintains a very high level of physical fitness and could probably pass me on the trail and lead the way on most trips ... if it were not for the rocks that she sneaks into my pack to slow me down! Somewhere along the way I gave her a "Pokey" character keychain, and then came cups, and tshirts with that pokey logo. On every summit photo I always have a picture of me holding Pokey (see my website: www.Amercan.us for photos). When Carol went to Yosemite two years ago she took "Gumby" with her and came home with wonderful pictures of Gumby hiking and climbing. On this trip I will try to do as TA is doing with her flat picture friend and send more pictures of Pokey climbing with me.
I look forward to our travels TOGETHER in the future ... and leaving the plastic Gumby and Pokey's at home as they need a rest!
Love you,
Pat :>)
Well Wishes from Thoroughbred Country
CathyandKev — Thu, 03/22/2007 - 13:38Pat,
I'm finally getting computer literate enough to blog!
Kevin and I wish you well on your journey to the top. I downloaded Paul's GoogleEarth map. Will this be the same route that you take? What an awesome site and sight. We wish we could be with you on your send-off, and even more so for your return! Our thoughts and prayers will be with you.
God be with you,

Majestic Khumbu
Patrick — Thu, 03/22/2007 - 15:43Hey Kathy:
Great to hear from you and appreciate the warm thoughts and prayers. I have followed the route of the climb on Mt. Everest's South Side for years and have always been in awe of the majestic beauty of the Khumbu icefall ... and soon get to experience this magical place.
I look forward to sharing the magic with you and Kevin ... thanks for being such good friends.
Take care,
Pat :>)
Hi Pat: Got your message,
Bill and Michele — Thu, 03/22/2007 - 14:22Hi Pat: Got your message, now I have set up my free acct. to see how that works. Hi Carol, I saw your message. I will be thinking of you while Pat is on his quest. The photos from Mt. Vinson were great, I loved the toilet and the bar. I noticed there was a little horse with you at the top, did you tell us about this in Ocracoke. Finding the perfect horse is my Everest. We know you have the luck and you have all our prayers. May the force be with you--corny, I know. Love ya, Michele and Bill
Horses on Mt. Everest
Patrick — Thu, 03/22/2007 - 15:53Hey Michelle:
Well, I guess that now you know all about the "horse in the pictures" (very adept of you to see that ... but then horse people do gravitate to horse "stuff"). You have probably heard me call Carol "Pokey" at some point and did not know the symbolism.
This site is all about people dealing with Mt. Everests in their daily lives ... mine just happens to be a 29,035 ft. rock that I am going to climb! For each of us our "Everests" are different as by using the term "Everest" we are usually referring to something that is insurmountable, or if so, done at extreme risk with little room for error. Many people have multiple "Everests" in their daily lives and the shadows from those tall cliffs can send one into despair. I am hopeful that as we all share our "Everests" we will enable others to see the trail ahead and help guide them to the top of their "Everest".
Love and Peace
Pat :>)

runnorm — Thu, 03/22/2007 - 15:18Hi Pat. This is Norm Ferris. Which route are you doing? As you may remember, I check the Everest News website daily so it will be twice as exciting following all of the different expeditions knowing you are on the mountain also. I will be praying for you and I hope you stay cough free! PS I'm jealous.
Route on Mt. Everest
Patrick — Thu, 03/22/2007 - 16:02Hey Norm:
Great to hear from you. I'm surprised that I did not see you at the Banff Mountain Film Festival last night at the State Museum ... it was awesome!
As you see in an earlier response I will be doing the south side route on Mt. Everest. Check out Paul's page as he has done a great job on referring to the route that we take. I will be on Henry Todd's team (www.ICE8000.com) and they will be having a team blog on their site.
Look forward to sharing the adventure and hope the Khumbu cough stays away!
Take care,

Best of luck in the job search.

State Paper article:)
Sandra D — Tue, 03/27/2007 - 23:49Pat, the articles in both the State and USA Today were great! I hope those help raise awareness and the donations pour in from all over the nation and Canada:) That's quite a picture of you in your climbing gear! Impressive! Have a wonderful trip over tomorrow, and I'll be saying prayers for your safety each day.
ps I saw Hedy Z, and she sends her well wishes to you.
Stay safe!

Raising Awareness
Patrick — Thu, 03/29/2007 - 18:05Hey Sandra:
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the articles and raising awareness. I am hopeful that all of us can spread the word on the challenges in the healthcare arena and in doing so will be great patient advocates
Say hi to Hedy for me ... when I took her position at PHR as Risk Mgr. I had no idea how much work went into that job! Hers were big shoes to fill, for such a petite lady!
Take care,
Pat :>)
Buena suerte mi amigo!
lynp — Wed, 03/28/2007 - 00:47Pat... I tried to call you tonight at home to wish you well, but both phonebook numbers wrong! (unfortunately I lost my Hispanic Outreach list.) Anyhow, I read the wonderful article in the State... EXCELLENT and so richly deserved. Please know that I will be sending good thoughts your way over the next couple of months. Bob sends his friendship and good wishes too. We will keep you in our prayers. You are a great guy and it will go beautifully... I will also contribute to your commendable fundraising effort. Take care of YOU, revel in your adventure opportunity, and know that you have so many friends sending love and light.
Hasta luego! Your friend, Lyn Phillips
Hi Pat: Good Luck, good
Bill and Michele — Wed, 03/28/2007 - 14:05Hi Pat: Good Luck, good wishes, prayers and thoughts are all with you from so many everywhere. Great article in USA Today. My neice is going back to school to become a nurse, we are sending your website to her. Just wanted to let you know, over the years we have told so many people about your adventures. We get quite a reaction when we tell people you are in the process of climbing Mt. Everest. Love ya, your friends, Michele and Bill
Adventures
Patrick — Thu, 03/29/2007 - 18:01Hey Michelle:
Life is an adventure, and we all struggle to get through. For some it's a piece of cake, whereas for others it's a disaster. Also, life is what you make of it and I have chosen to experience as much as I can in the short time that we have here on earth. In doing so I do appear to be different, but in a good way I hope!
Congrats on your niece becoming a nurse ... great profession!
Talk to you again soon,
Pat :>)
Good Luck Pat
