I will be posting the Summit Scholarship Update daily for the rest of this week as I realize that not everyone reads the blog daily and I want everyone to know how easy it has now become to donate to this scholarship!
If you are familiar with the details, please jump ahead to my daily message!
Summit Scholarship Update
Following is an update from Liesl:
The USC website for the climb
is now online at www.sc.edu/everest. The University of South Carolina team has created a comprehensive site
which includes many video clips about
your trek and your goal, links to news
coverage, great pictures, and how to make a gift.
Gifts to the cause have been coming in faster, competing with your climb, and we're now at $4,397! Recently, Palmetto Health Alliance made a generous Mount Kilimanjaro level donation. There are many other gifts mentioned even on this blog that are coming down the pike. Every gift helps us get closer to the "one dollar for every foot" goal. Let's continue to spread the word! We've been sending posters out all over the state and through the country, and are now
having more printed.
Online Giving:
https://giftsonline.sc.edu/contribute.asp
As of today, the Summit Scholarship is
available as a drop-down choice for
online giving. The new steps are more
simple:
Fill out all information as described. When you reach "Contribution
Information", enter as follows in the
drop-down categories:
1. Division/Campus: SELECT "Columbia
Nursing"
2. Category: SELECT "Scholarships"
3: Gift Designation: SELECT "Summit Scholarship Endowment Fund"
Today's excitement was the summit bids of our fellow team mates. We here at basecamp awoke early and by 6am were crowded around a walkie talkie waiting expectantly for news from the summit! Slowly the news trickled in as team mate after team mate successfully made it to the top of the world, and then safely back to high camp! All of us were filled with exhiliration as we have developed close bonds of friendship over the past 51 days! We silently prayed for their safety as the hours went by and those prayers were answered with safe summits. Rob, Bo, and Ward we are extremely proud of you! Thanks for blazing a trail to the top for us ... we follow very closely soon!
Now we look to our own daunting task of getting up the mountain and pray that the weather window will remain favorable for us as we set out to climb to the top of the world.
Hopefully will be able to confirm tomorrow our departure date as many variables still exist that can prevent us from leaving as soon as we would like to depart! Keep on the edge of your seats ... we are!
Additionally, today I received my NASCAR flag! It was flown in on a military helicopter that had landed to evacuate some climbers. According to the dates on the package it took only 9 days to get to me here at basecamp from Daytona Beach, Florida! I now have a renewed faith in the US Postal Service as they really came through with this package ... and right on time. As one blogger noted, this delivery process in itself would make a great commercial either for the US Postal Service (any US Postal Service people on the blog?) and/or for NASCAR! Thanks Liz for making this happen and I look forward to photos on top of the world with this flag to show just how far NASCAR's fan support has spread!
Your Messages:
Carol:
Hi sweetheart. Great talking to you earlier! Look forward to more frequent conversations as we prepare to head up the hill. I will plan to do a text blog and audioblog each day, and we will work out our calls!
Exciting day here as the 3 members of our team in the first wave (Rob, Bo, and Ward) all summited safely! We could not ask for anything more perfect! What a great day it was for all of us! I am sure that they are pretty knackered, and hope are resting well at this time!
Thanks for the donation to the Summit Scholarship from the SC Heart Center. It appears that Palmetto Health Richland has met your challenge and donated also!
It's Day #51 ... and the end is in sight!
I love you and miss you terribly :>)
Pat :>)
Canadian Friends:
Kevin, Cheri & family ... great to hear from you and no worries on not being online much as I figured you guys were monitoring the blog! Sounds like you were quite busy! Here all is great as we prepare for our summit bid. Our team was split due to better utilization of resources and now is our turn!
Am feeling strong and looking forward to the challenge! Hate that we had a bad connection at the farm the other night as I was looking forward to talking to all! Is there a bad connection on the farm phone as I believe I have had that problem when calling from SC in the past!
I believe it is quite expensive to call to a Sat Phone, but I am happy to call you at a pre-arranged date/time if you would like!
I have been wearing the Nortel gear everyday at basecamp and glad that they sent the hat/turtleneck ... has been part of my daily wear!
Appreciate that Almonte is behind me ... can feal the vibes! Say hi to Cheri and the kids!
Columbia Friends:
Susan ... great to hear from you! I am glad to be over the sinus infection and am feeling strong! I feel very fortunate to have so many well wishers and am blessed to have so many good friends! Look forward to our get together on my return! Thanks as always for the best wishes!
Ashlyn ... thanks so much for your message and I look forward to the opportunity to talk to your school about my adventure on Mt. Everest! Check with your teacher and if she says it's okay, let me know and we can arrange some dates. I am glad that your Mom told you about my climb. Please say hi to her for me and I look forward to hearing from you.
Palmetto Health Friends:
Tim ... have not heard anything from you regarding the potential sponsorship from your company (Tunguska). Send me a blog message today regarding status!
USC Friends:
Liesl ... thanks once again for all your help. Hope you can update the status of donations over next few weeks as I finish the climb!
All The Others:
David (aka Demento) ... am feeling great and the summit bid could not happen at a better time! Weather looks good, and with all support systems in place we stand to do well! Keep tuned in.
**Contact my brother Danny through his email and send me your home and cell numbers/email so I can get in touch with you ASAP! Danny will forward to me the numbers and your email also so I can contact you!
MC ... looking forward to that last trip through the icefall! It has been so great to have so much support for this climb and I can't begin to thank everyone for their prayers and best wishes! Thanks for noting my foundation ... Carol. I could not have done any of this without her undying support!
It has been my pleasure to dialogue with so many people and am hopeful that the majority are more aware of the looming nursing shortage ... and a wonderful opportunity to make a difference! Thanks as always for your support ... and never say "my big mountain is just Kilimanjaro" as it is a formidable challenge!
Ward's Mom ... hope to see Ward in the next few days and will relay your best wishes! We are proud of him!
Mira ... in this case it was the US Postal Service that came through with an unbelieveably quick and timely delivery! More over FedEx!
Conni ... Bo does Yoga (sounds like a sports commercial from 10-15 years ago!). Great to hear from you and thanks for your donation to the Summit Scholarship! Appreciate that your family of nurses would be more understanding of my cause, and your own experience with nurses years ago reinforces the fact that we need more qualified, competent nurses to help more people win their battles!
I will see Bo in a few days and will relate your best wishes and thanks for those extended to the entire team also!
Shanda ... thanks for the vote of confidence regarding me being the poster boy for those over 50! You would not want a picture of me for a pinup right now as there would be way too many ribs showing! I promised my wife I would come home intact, and alive ... so fingers and toes will be counted upon arrival!
Many thanks for the wishes of good luck!
Herwin ...not long to go now, we are just waiting in BC. Our first team did really well and everyone is now back in C4. more news soon.....
Penny ...don't bite your nails too soon, few more days to go, thanks for the thoughts...mike
Bob & Jess ... Every great journey starts with one small step but now its time to take some pretty big steps..... I'll let you know what date we are planning to depart soon...mike

God Speed!
tac — Thu, 05/17/2007 - 16:17Hi, Pat.
What an exciting time! We are with you all the way! It's great news that your teammates summitted successfully. Know you will follow soon. If my information is accurate, you are 9:45 ahead of the Eastern time zone in the U.S. That would mean a 1:00PM to 2:00PM summit would be between 3:15AM and 4:15AM Eastern in the U.S. At least I think that's right. We'll look forward to your announcement of your push to the summit and keep you and your teammates in our thoughts and prayers. God speed! Tom
Hahaha!
Andrea — Thu, 05/17/2007 - 16:28Pat,
I sat at work reading your post this morning, laughing out loud and wondering if anyone would ask me why I was laughing! Reminds me of the time I was slogging my way high up on the Muir snowfield on Mt. Rainier and felt something scratching my right leg. When it came time to take a break, I undid the gaitor on my right leg, reached up my pant leg and pulled out a dryer sheet! It made for a good laugh at the time...not quite as funny as underpants on the head though, I must say.
Good luck on your summit climb!
Andrea
Pat's Everest Climb
Visitor — Thu, 05/17/2007 - 17:31Goo'day, Pat. We're also anxious for your climb, and anticipating successful news! It has been so interesting following your adventures. Thank you for keeping us informed and letting us share in this exciting and dangerous mission. We have total confidence in you, Pat. If anyone can do this, it is YOU!
In the real, albeit, mundane world, things here in MN are good. Weather is great in the 70s. (Yes, you will feel warmth again soon!) School year is winding down. The girls' softball and track seasons are soon coming to a close. We are fitting in the time to go horseback riding.
Good luck, Pat. You're always in our thoughts and prayers. Love, Donna K. and girls

Visitor — Thu, 05/17/2007 - 17:38Pat, Thanks so much for emailing Ashlyn back. She was up checking the blog this morning to see if you had responded. I told her you may still be sleeping since you are on a different time schedule. She wrote down the blog address and was taking it to school to show her teacher and classmates.
The Nursing Full Board is meeting today and am taking the address to your blog down and tell them about your adventure. I know they will be so excited about you raising money for a Nursing Scholarship.
Take care and again thanks for emailing Ashlyn, she's really excited about reading about your adventure as well as the other people climbing Mt Everest. Good Luck and I wish you much success on your climb. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers!!!!

I am sure everyone enjoyed the moment of comic relief when you showed up with you unique hat accessory. I am sure that you have experienced what all nurses have those humorous moments to break the tension of our workday.
I was so thrilled to hear that Bo,Ward and Rob made it to the summit. Hope all keeps going well for you and the rest of the group.
Stay safe and focused

efkh — Thu, 05/17/2007 - 18:04Hi Pat!
Oh! I am so glad the flag made it in time....and talk about an entrance!!! I have no doubt it brings you good luck, and good fortune (Kristy tells me Nascar loves your story!!!).
It's been an exhilarating few days keeping up with all of you. I would appreciate if you gave Bo a huge hug for me. It was an incredible moment to hear he had just reached his lifetime goal! I haven't stopped smiling for him since...
Best of luck to YOU on your climb! Be safe and warm up there! And carry that flag all the way to the top!
My very best,
Liz
Ok, the underwear story was good!
Visitor — Thu, 05/17/2007 - 17:56Pat, I'm not sure I would have told that story but am extremely glad you did! Your sense of humor is still there! We are almost as anxious about your climb as you are! My stomach is just fluttering at the excitement you and your team mates must be experiencing! Going to the top of the world is just phenomenal! Good Luck...stay safe, and just bring me back a picture of the snow (since you can't bring me the real thing!) Belinda
Pat: Love the picture and
Lisa W. — Thu, 05/17/2007 - 19:01Pat:
Love the picture and your crazy dressing habits. We love the fact that there were no witnesses, yet you shared with us for a great laugh.
Glad to hear that you are feeling so much better.
As you stated, it is amazing how fast the weather changes, so you know that you have to be extra, extra careful. We had a huge rain storm Tuesday evening that just dumped the rain and flooded the streets and the lightening was wicked. The lightening struck a huge pine tree (much taller then the house) about half a block from my house and just splintered the tree into small pieces of wood. The lightening also struck my neighbors house and started an electrical fire in the walls. Five fire trucks, an ambulance, fire chief, four police cars, news crews and the fire & water damage repair truck, lots of running and then things were back to normal. Lots of damage in the house but everyone was fine. Just goes to show how fast weather can change and the power it has. I am glad that you all remember that and are watching the weather so closely.
Can't wait to hear more exciting stories and see more beautiful pictures. Stay safe.
Lisa W.

Mary Clare Reinhardt — Thu, 05/17/2007 - 20:44Fantastic news on the Everest summiteers! What an achievement! Big time congrats! Wishing them a safe return to BC.
Pat, love the new look you are sporting in your photograph; you never know when you might need a clean pair of underware!!! Very handy to just happen to have a pair on top of your head!
As for Kili, I certainly did not mean to understate it's formidableness. I just wanted to commend "your foundation" for being such a great support and your "biggest fan"! And just as importantly, you appreciate her support tremendously. What a great team you two are! Regarding my big mountain, I feel so privileged that I have an opportunity to set foot on her mighty slopes and possibly see the glaciers on top while they are still there! I am so excited!
Look forward to hearing you and company are on your way!

Visitor — Thu, 05/17/2007 - 21:27Wow it's been 51 days! John mistakely said it would take you two weeks to climb that mountain (he was quickly corrected) and now you are so close to completing your goal. I am so proud and happy for you. Please continue to be safe and don't let all that excitement cloud your judgement. Mary and I look forward to seeing and having lunch with you upon your return. Please take care. Minnie

book — Fri, 05/18/2007 - 02:31pat . congratulations to rob ,bo and ward and sherpas for summiting !! guess you must be ''rearing to go''.looks like the weather is holding up well.hope these extra few days have enabled you to recouperate even more and refuel your ''motor''.those summiting on the northside have been getting held up in ''traffic jams'' which must be frustrating.if you strike the same trouble put on your new''hat''and wave your 'nascar' flag at them, they are bound to pull over and let you overtake!! all the very best [ken,nz] p.s.looks like theres a weather front coming in monday[ish]...

Visitor — Fri, 05/18/2007 - 03:59Hey Pat
I think I missed a day of posting, but know that I am thinking of you everyday even if not at a computer. The undies on the head crack me up - you are much better off posing with the Nascar flag at the Summit (and I know you know that!)
What a great story about the delivery of the flag!
The new moon was on May 16 (Wednesday) so we are nearing one of my favorite phases of the moon - the crescent moon, the waxing moon. Smiling down on us from the sky like a Cheshire Cat! I hope you will see it in clear skies and know that the New Moon is a time for new beginnings and growth. It seems fitting as you begin a new pathway to the Summit.
Hope the weather cooperates for your colleagues. How exciting to have your first set of team members make it to the top! I am sure your adrenaline and passion for the climb will make it hard to relax!
I am staying tuned and will report your progress to others I see at the ambulatory surgery conference I am attending at downtown Denver. Its a good meeting - but has been a bit hectic with long days (as usual exhibit schedule).
Take care - my prayers are with you
Bonnie
To the top
Deb — Fri, 05/18/2007 - 05:05Congrats to your team mates - glad to hear that they made it & they are all safe & healthy. I'm confident your time will be soon & you too will make it up & back safely.
Oscar,
I went to the Dr. today & I got to take the boot off my foot, but I have to wear an ankle brace for a while. But he said I'm healing well.
Patio,
Had my soccer tryouts for next season this week. I like my new coach.
I think I might have caught your sinus infection. I haven't been feeling very well, but like you am trying to keep hydrated.
Love you & take care.

craigb — Fri, 05/18/2007 - 10:58Pat,
Best wishes as you prepare for your final summit push; hopefully the 'stars will align' and the combination of good weather, not too much 'traffic' and your good preparation will result in much celebrating in a few days time.
Craig, Melbourne
P.S. I would be interested to know if you have some time how you would rank six of the seven summits regarding degree of difficulty [we know where Mount Kosciuszko would be ranked!]
Nice hat
Kayball — Fri, 05/18/2007 - 13:09You made me laugh out loud with your underwear story. Love the pix. Continuing lots of prayers for your safety and success. Kay Ball RN

Bill and Michele — Fri, 05/18/2007 - 13:51Boxers or briefs? This will probably be the photo that makes it to USA Today. April calls you "SuperPat", this could become part of your super hero wardrobe:) You go Pat, we are all waiting with you. I can't believe 51 days has gone by since we started posting. For all those who are returning, I pray for their continued safety. To all of you getting ready for the Summit climb, more good luck, good weather and prayers sent your way. Michele
