Six weeks to go- Kendal, 18th February 2008

< Newer

This is now the period when time starts flying by before departure on 30th March morning!  This week-end was a rare one with beautiful weather here in the Lakes, and I managed to get out on the fells twice. The views were particularly superb on crisp, frosty days with blue sky and little wind, and it felt good to be alive. I have a very dodgy back nowadays, and a recent flare up left me doubtful of the wisdom of some hours in the hills, but I gambled and got away with it.

Though my fitness never satisfies me these days, I was gratified to overtake throughout the day, and not be overtaken, as it were, which is the best I can hope for at this stage. Going downhill, as ever, is more problematic than going up! There are many small things to sort out before too long, as I intend to send a barrel out to Kathmandu with things in for base-camp...an act of faith if ever there is one. It's quite magical to arrive at base-camp in mid-April to find your barrel awaiting, courtesy of airplane, helicopter and yak. Henry assures me he's "hardly ever" lost anything in transit, but as you send out altitude boots, crampons and down suit one can't help but think of the consequences of loss etc. Ah well. One of many acts of trust required on the way to this goal.

I expect to add re-hydration drinks(probably SIS again), which are essential to revive both flagging palates and muscles on the mountain, along with many AAA and AA batteries for torches and mp3 players.....I prefer the latter to be non-rechargeable types, as it gets such a hassle to keep everything charged up(camera, video, pda, satphone), and I just LOVE my music. I'm a relatively poor sleeper, and there are many long, long nights on these trips, where music is invaluable. I admit to enjoying listening when walking in at times, if not in company or conversation, of course.I think I'll try having some music high on the mountain this time(though not, of course in the ice-fall, where all senses are needed). It felt strange last time on summit night without the distraction of favorite songs, almost naked. I think it'll help through that long night of ascent above the South Col. We shall see.

I'm off work next week, and hope to use that time for more fitness work, mostly up and down hills. I'm terribly aware that many would-be summiteers devote much more time and energy to physical training than I have ever managed, embarassingly so for me, but I can only fit in what I can in my complex life, what with work, sons and my bad back!

I'm grappling with the mechanism of building up this site, and hope to improve my presentation and thoughts with time, along with mastery of which photos to add, and where. It's all jolly clever.

Best of LUCK my friend...

We are cheering you on every step of the way! Believe you can do it, make the right decisions and come back above all else! Say big hello to Ray and Andre who are good buddies. Big hello also to Henry and Sue! Tom Clowes.

Good luck Mike

All the best - be safe, and here's hoping that it's third time lucky - as clearly luck does have a place in this - no matter how fit you are....! Look after that back.
Be thinking of you.
Simon

Good luck

Hey, thanks Simon, you have taken my web-site virginity! Well done for looking. I'm still preparing the site,it's not fully on view yet. Having a bit of trouble loading photos, but I'm working on it
Yes, luck is definitely needed for absolutely anyone up there, but craft, skill, good advice and great sherpas go a long way to improving the chances of taking advantage of any luck.
I have a great team behind me, and I hope a big enough heart to push on this time(not cardiomegaly though, I hope!) Hope you dip into this from time to time, and that it helps you to appreciate the glorious comforts of home life later on.

Thanks

Thanks Tom, I really appreciate it. You of all people will be able to follow our progress(hopefully) with a great understanding of what's going on, as you summited so well in 2006 a few days before I tried. As you know, we hoped to be trying it together, and I'm sorry things didn't work out that way in the end, but you know how pleased I was for you and Ben that day...one of the best memories of my mountain life in truth.
If I can give you a glimmer of the same sort of vicarious pleasure with any success of my own, then I shall be delighted.
I will do the best I can, there is no doubt. Hope Sebastian starts giving you and Di some better sleep SOON...compared to what you're going through, this expedition will sometimes seem a doddle!

3rd time lucky

Dear Mike,
I am delighted and honoured that you have asked me to help with this blog. It feels great to be even a small cog in what we all hope will be your final and successful ascent. See you soon. Harry.

3rd time lucky

Harry, my dear old friend, I fear you may be a somewhat bigger cog than you thought, by moderating this site for me. As we are going to find out together over the next few months, there is quite a lot that has to go on to keep it all running smoothly, and you will have a fair share in that.
We both know how that will all be worth it if the trip ends in a successful summit, but the point is that even without that ending, there is a journey to be made, and this way it can be better shared than in the past? I hope, anyway.
You know I'm grateful for your much needed help with this.

Music

I'm curious what music you'll be listening to on your climb?
Best of luck to you...

Shanda

Music

Thank you for your good wishes Shanda. As for music, well I can get lost in random selections of Moody Blues, Be Bop Deluxe, Coldplay, Pink Floyd, Bowie, Dido, Amy MacDonald, Kathryn Williams, oh I don't know, quite a few more. Ther's a lot of scope for classical music too, but there's only so much I can get on small players...I avoid iPods as they need alot of charging(when charging capacity is at a premium), and I'm not sure they do well at altitude or in the cold.
I won't be listening to anything whilst moving through the icefall, where one's senses may be needed at anytime, but I intend to be more ruthless this year about listening on the long plod through the western cwm, and also on summit night if I get one! Any distraction from the pain is worth a try I reckon.
These trips make you revert to that relaxed teenage time for a while...nice.
