Pat & Paul crossing paths in the Khumbu ... May 3, 2007.Day #36

Location: Basecamp
Altitude: 5364m
Local Time: 5:15pm / May 3
Weather: Cold (40's) snow

I had just about finished reponding to everyone's posted messages when a technical error wiped everything out ... so it happens here on the mountains too! But where is my IT support? Actually, I passed him (Paul Adler) earlier today in the Khumbu (see photo) as he was headed up, and I down. We chatted for only a few minutes but he looked and sounded good!
Well, Camps 2 & 3 are behind me now as we have just returned to basecamp after finishing our acclimitization schedule. Now we get some rest and relaxation in preparation for our fiinal push to the summit! We have no idea when summit day will be, but as soon as I hear I will let all of you know ASAP!
It was sunny on our arrival to basecamp 3 hrs. ago, but now for the past hr. it has been very cold and snowing! Welcome back to basecamp where the weather changes many times in a day! It is good to be back to our own tents and personal belongings and is our home away from home!

Hope you had a chance to see the full moon last night. Here it took it's time creeping over the Lhotse Face, but once it did it was spectacular! It is a scene that I will never forget!

Your Messages:

Carol:
Hi sweetheart. It's great to be back to basecamp ... safe and sound! The moon last night was beautiful and I sent warm thouhts your way! The descent down to basecamp today was again pretty hot, but we made it for lunch and were greeted with a great meal. On arrival Henry noted that I had lost weight ... could not tell myself, but did note that the pants were a little looser! Saw Paul in the Khumbu and looks/sounds great!
Gotta go as I want to send this blog and call you too!

I love you and miss you terribly :>)

Pat :>)

AORN Friends:

Judy ... great to hear from you as always! I would love to be a general session speaker for Congress in Anaheim and have expressed my interests to those that need to know. I am sure that on my arrival back from Nepal many things will fall into place!
Zoot-zoot back to you with the best of interests!

Rose ... I appreciate you getting the word out to all at AORN. You would make a great campaign manager! I hope you enjoy the poster when you get it from Liesl! I believe that I am on the USC homepage www.sc.edu I believe is the address, or just google University of South Carolina.

Bonnie ... thanks as always for the overwhelming support. Between the support of you and Rose I could run for elected office and win ... no contest! You guys are great!
Appreciate the attention to the Summit Scholarship and/or the AORN Foundation ... both very worthy causes of which to contribute during Nurses Week!
Your weather sounds like here, one minute sunshine, the next hail and snow!
I hope to be able to coomunicate all the way to the top ... if not by text, by audioblog!

Canadian Friends:

Hey Danny ... sending the blog now and will check for your email specific to Dianne and the interview!

Columbia Friends:

Kristen ... thanks for the update on the prom. I look forward to seeing pictures when I get home! Sorry to hear that you did not get in to the Parttners Program, but sounds like you have already got anothr opportunity at Lexingon!
Best of luck against Dorman!

Nancy ... thanks so much for doing such a great job of keeping Carol busy playing tennis while I have been gone! She may have to take a little break from it all when I get home as I will want to keep her to myself for awhile!
We are back at basecamp now and will be enjoying some rest time before the final push to the summit! Thanks for following along and say hi to all!

Palmetto Health Friends:

Sandra ... glad to see that you have taken up the nurses challenge to donate $100.00. Your example I am sure will prompt more to do so! I am sure that Danny can make changes as needed on the map/website!
I’ll ove the Mark Twain quote ... where do you find these?

Kate ... can't wait to get back and see that pregnant belly of yours! When is the due date? My beard has gotten quite gray and bushy ... but trimmed it lately so would not look too much like a mountain man!
Yes, I am anxious, excited, nervous, and all the gamut of emotions!
Say hi to all!

USC Friends:

Mary ... sorry to hear that you are so busy with grading ... but it will be over soon! Yes, it would be wonderful if 300 nurses could take that challenge ... I already know of at least three that have done so!
Whatever the outcome it has been nice having everyone along ... and I love the support!

All The Others:

Bill & Michele ... did you think that Mike looks like Bill? We are glad to have Rob along as his experience will be invaluable to those with less experience such as myself! It's great also to have doctors and nurses on the team ... never know when you will need one!

Alan ... the view from Camp 3 was breathless, as was the climb to get there! Had a headache on arrival, but okay in the morning!

Kurt ... it's hard to imagine but burning heat & dehydration with cold happens quite often! We really have to hydrate well and layer appropriately!
We are back in basecamp now for rest and relaxation in anticipation of the final push! Say hi to the girls!

Ann & Graham .. thanks for constantly checking in! Now back at basecamp we will be resting for awhile ... but the blog will continue!

Joan ... sounds like you didn't do too much relaxing on your birthday! Glad that you got preparations done for the house and enjoyed the day on the road to VA. Glad to hear about Amber ... hope the program works!
Look forward to seeing your new properties!

Rhonda ... thanks for checking in on the climbs! Many more photos and stories to come!

Debi ... great to hear from another old Corpus friend! Glad that Dorothy got in touch with you. This blog has already reunited many old friendships! I enjoyed my MMC days and made many friends. Dr. Ron Schlimmer is helping me to reunite with many of those friends!
It's my pleasure to advocate for nursing and bring attention to the nursing shortage issue! Please pass the word about the Summit Scholarship! Thanks for the prayers!

Ken ... the Lhotse Face was a brute! I was a little overheated from the approach to the face, but the climb up took every bit of strength and concentration! Glad I only have to go up that face one more time! Coming down was just as chalenging!

Joan ... yes, I have seen the flag as Mike took pictures of it with the mountains in the background! The climb up the Lhotse Face was very awesome and scary ... especially for me and my fear of heights! I never looked down while climbing!
Mike and I met Mark Inglis on our original hike to basecamp many weeks ago! I believe I have seen the movie you describe ... quite powerful!

David (aka Demento) ... have not heard from you in awhile, hope all is well! Have you been following my conversations with Ron Schlimmer over the past week? If not, please review blogs! Also, have not heard back from you regarding a question of our climber Anna (6months into ED Fellowship Program) spending some time with you (see blog from a week ago).
Camp 3 was a push and the Lhotse Face a brute! Back at basecamp now as we await word for final push.
The love and support from friends, family, and bloggers will definitely get me to the top. Keep in touch ... I need your daily support now more than ever!

Messages

Hi Anna and Rob! (please pass this on to them)

Hi guys,
Really great to see the photos of you both and read about how it's going. I've just sent you both an email, but in case you can't get to it, this is just to say hi, let you know i'm thinking of you, and all the best for the big climb to the summit!
Good luck to everyone, thinking of you all!
Lots of love, Yvette

That must be why I thought

That must be why I thought Mike was so good looking, he reminded me of Bill, the same eyes, does he have the same profile? It was nice to see you with Paul too, he is one reason we are able to communicate, I enjoy his photos very much. I don't know if you are able to get to his blog but he is very informative. Getting to know your fellow climbers makes this even more personal and we are pulling for all of you. We will be sending in a donation for the cause. Take care, we check in daily and we are very excited for you. Good thoughts and prayers sent your way. Michele

Final push

Pat,

Holy schmata! You do have a few friends. Reading all the posts you answer in just one day makes me wonder if you have any time for climbing. ;-) I do have one query: now that you have finished your acclimation runs, assuming the weather is good, when would you normally expect to start up for the final push? I presume you'll take a few days then it's on up again.

Next step

Hi Pat and team,
We will await the next step for you and the team! Nice photo of you and Paul, so neat to be climbing along and bump into a friend! The crazy mix of people spread out along the route from BC, to all of us out here checking up on you-it is really inspiring!
Have a great day!
Ann and Graham
PS Full moon was fabulous over our yard in KY!

Final Ascent

Hey Uncle Pat,

I've been keeping up to date on your trek and the pictures, guest blogs, and descriptions by you of your journey have been fantastic! From your descriptions the trek to basecamp sounds like something that everyone should try and do at some point in their life. Have a safe trip to the top and I am looking forward to hearing all about the trip and seeing more pictures when you and aunt Carol are home for Danny's Wedding.

Bulk Up

Pat,
The girls say Hi, and wish you all the best in your quest to the summit. I sure hope that you can relax and feed your body to get physically prepared for your summit challenge.......you do look thin in your pictures. Bulk up big guy.........
Praying for favorable conditions so you can reach the summit in the coming days soon after your rest @ BC. Wishing you well.............
Stay Strong,
KK / Minn.

okay okay...(Bo's yoga friend here)

So I have to ask (just like the above messege from Steve Dansker), Pat? How do you have the time to climb? You have some many friends and family that you respond to? How funny! I don't even know you, but i feel as if I do (after reading your blogs).
You guys are S-O-L-I-D. Solid.
You guys are also almost there... the final stretch. What you all have been waiting for patiently awaits YOUR excellence, strength, and integrity.

Enjoy the journey!

Hey Pat and team

Great photo of Paul and you!!! Love those smiles! You must feel great having completed the rotation to C-3! Rest well and stay strong for your summit push. I hope there will be some good weather windows in the days ahead.

Thanks for the great blogs,
MC

ONWARD AND UPWARD!

Hi Pat: Well I guess you are excited to be on the last leg of your journey! It certainly has been an incredible one! I will be a little sad to see it end. I have really enjoyed everything! Your wife will be very happy I am sure. She really sounds like a wonderful and suppotive partner! Hopefully I may get a chance to meet her in Almonte this summer. So, onward and upward...God speed~! Take care and God Bless!...Sue:)

great quote...

I am certain you have a very well off and ready crew.... I just read this quote and I thought of you and your team... "The summit is optional, getting down mandatory." Stay Safe.

Hi Jen

The quote, "Getting to the summit is optional. Getting back down is mandatory." is by Ed Viesturs 1996.

Great quote!!! One of my favorites!

Great job Pat!!

Pat, what a great job you've done so far!! Glad you're back to basecamp for a well deserved rest. Have fun adding a few pounds! It's not often you get to do that! Glad you like the quotes. I have a special one for you and your friend Sean when you reach the summit. The photo of you and Paul was a good one:)

Rest well!
Sandra

Hey Pat

Wow, ready for the final push!! That is awsome. Your blog is very addictive and very educational. I had no idea how complicated this climbing process was. Thanks for letting me share in the adventure. I donated $100 to the Summit Scholarship last weekend (thanks Liesl for the help) and in response to the challenges from your Canadian friends I am donating another $100 today. Good luck and Godspeed in the days to come.
Rob

Wellwishers

Pat,
I am touched by the number and variety of wellwishers on your blog. I know that I was skeptical about the blog at first (and yes, you were right, and I don't say that often!) but it has allowed me and many others to go with you on this incredible journey. I want to thank all your supporters and wellwishers for their support, encouragement, kind words, and prayers. I feel we have made many new friends and renewed old friendships as we are all drawn together by your amazing goal. I do like the quote by Ed Viesturs-he is a wise man and that is probably why he survived all his climbs and made it to retirement! I wish all of you a successful trip and always remember, it is the journey, not the destination.
Love you Pat,
Carol

amalgams!!!well done team.

pat and team. well done to you all! now relax and recharge your ''batteries'' [the full moon in auckland was on a crystal clear night]. all the best [ken.nz]

I'm here Pat

Reading your blog is the highlight of my day, Pat. Wait, going to the bathroom is the highlight-reading your blog is my second favorite thing. Got your message re: Anna; she is most welcome to hang out up here with me. I'm learning more about medicine in my current practice than I ever would have thought possible. I'll share those thoughts with you when you come this summer. Also, I've kept up with the stream from Ron. We will ride! Lastly, Pat; what will be your next summit? David

Go for it Pat!

Hey Pat,
Just been reading your recent updates. Things seem great!

I will be following you with much excitement in the coming weeks.

Climb well...this is the big one!
Gavin

AORN Bonnie D

Well Pat, if you are declaring your run for US President, be sure to let Rose and I know so we can get you signed up for the next debates. You may have heard the democrats already had their first debate last week and I think the republicans had their tonight. It seems its almost a 2 year campaign these days so you best hurry! Think about your platforms and your jingles as you relax at Base Camp or below (yah, right, first thing on your mind, huh?!) We did have elections this week in Denver too - I think you would have a tough race against our mayor as he won by a big margin (but of course, Rose and I would do our best). The only thing we can't help with for campaigning is the AORN elections (sorry, but we can't be bought!)

Beautiful mystical moon tonight - a light orange as it came up from the clouds on the horizon. May it continue to light your way. I love hearing from you. You have an amazing following of dedicated people and we all appreciate your attention in responding. Pretty amazing technology you are pulling off here!
Rest up and restore strength. We are all behind you and with you in spirit!
Bonnie D

Go Pat!!

Hi Pat, I've been following along via Paul's MyEverest.com and just wanted to say "Great job so far!" and give you some encouragement and support. You are an inspiration to all of us, and your blogs from the mountain make us all feel as if we are right there in the Khumbu with you!

That is a winning photo of you and Paul together in The Icefall -- I want to see those same smiles in both of your Summit Photos in the very near future.

I have a co-worker from Lancaster, Pennsylvania on the mountain too, making his first attempt at Everest -- his name is Terry Schuck, and he's with SummitClimb and Dan Mazur. I know they're on their final acclim. rotation right now, heading up to Camp 3 and perhaps a foray to the Yellow Band. If you run into Terry, give him a warm hello and best wishes from his "Amish friends" at Lancaster Laboratories!

Rest now and bask in the "thick" air of Base Camp for awhile! Get strong for the final push up the mountain. You are so, so close to achieving your dream. I send prayers for safety and strength to you all.

Climb safe. Climb strong.

Blessings,
Mark R in Pennsylvania

The Moon

Ok so it is exam week here at USC and what better thing to do then go to Sonic late at night... God bless that place... but anyway as we were sitting there I noticed the moon over the top of Whaley’s Mill and it was spectacular! I forced everyone I was with to take some time away from our conversation to look at it and we all had a moment. It was kind of orangish tonight but great none the less... but now you and you team will have time to sit and anticipate the road ahead so don't get to nervous waiting for your window and enjoy your stay! Keep pressing on and stay safe!
-Alan Baker

HI from sunny Ohio

HI Pat,

Lots of prayers going out for you during these exciting final days until you get to the top. We have our AORN chapter dinner meeting on Tues evening and I will make donation slips so people can take them to donate to the Summit Scholarship. Our weather is getting better everyday but I keep thinking how cold you must get some nights in your tent. Please keep your wits about you and summit safely. And then return to all of us because we can't wait to hear and see pix from this "chance of a lifetime" adventure. We're all living vicariously through you. Lots of prayers, Kay Ball RN

Waiting in the airport terminal...

If I figured it correctly you have a week or so before your summit push...not unlike being stuck in the terminal before taking to the sky. Since you cannot bathe or do laundry in the hail, sleet and snow, I bring gifts of "IQ Challenges" - to entertain and occupy when you are tent-bound. I'll start with ones that are labeled easy - but will happily provide any level you request. Ready?
1. Make 2 five letter words from the following letters: L A G O E H E R S G
2. You are in Columbia, which is 50 miles from Orangeburg. You must get to Orangeburg in 1 hour. You drive the first half of the distance at 25 mph. How fast must you drive to second half of the distance to get to Orangeburg on time?
There you go - something with which to fight mental fatique or boredom! No response needed - you have plenty of correspondence to maintain! God keep you - Orem's Theory
