I will be posting the Summit Scholarship Update daily for the rest of this week as I realize that not everyone reads the blog daily and I want everyone to know how easy it has now become to donate to this scholarship!
If you are familiar with the details, please jump ahead to my daily message!
Summit Scholarship Update
Following is an update from Liesl:
The USC website for the climb
is now online at www.sc.edu/everest. The University of South Carolina team has created a comprehensive site
which includes many video clips about
your trek and your goal, links to news
coverage, great pictures, and how to make a gift.
Gifts to the cause have been coming in faster, competing with your climb, and we're now at $4,397! Recently, Palmetto Health Alliance made a generous Mount Kilimanjaro level donation. There are many other gifts mentioned even on this blog that are coming down the pike. Every gift helps us get closer to the "one dollar for every foot" goal. Let's continue to spread the word! We've been sending posters out all over the state and through the country, and are now
having more printed.
Online Giving:
https://giftsonline.sc.edu/contribute.asp
As of today, the Summit Scholarship is
available as a drop-down choice for
online giving. The new steps are more
simple:
Fill out all information as described. When you reach "Contribution
Information", enter as follows in the
drop-down categories:
1. Division/Campus: SELECT "Columbia
Nursing"
2. Category: SELECT "Scholarships"
3: Gift Designation: SELECT "Summit Scholarship Endowment Fund"
Last night in our guest house we met quite a cross-section of travelers and reinforced for me that this trip is all about the journey! We met a Canadian father and his two sons (18 & 21) who were trekking to basecamp, and then on to other adventures. They had a unique family relationship where they took adventure vacations each year as a family. It was very refreshing to see this type of family relationship and can only imagine how worldly these boys will be as they progress through life!
I also met a young Israeli who had just finished his required military service and was now traveling for a year before returning to university. Another gentleman was from California and was a veterinarian. In addition to his work with animals all over the world, he had done humanitarian work in Tibet where he helped mothers to better understand the birth delivery process and how to troubleshoot problems!
The list goes of unique individuals that we have met, and with each person I meet I grow a little, and this reinforces the journey aspect of our trip!
Today we departed Lobuche for our destination of basecamp. The hike lasted about 4 hours (all uphill) and the last 30 minutes was in a light snowfall. It was great to stretch the legs again and surprisingly felt quite well as we put the climb into basecamp behind us.
Hopefully tomorrow we can get up-to-speed with approaching weather windows and potential dates for heading up the mountain.
I wanted to remind all that part of our team is already up the mountain and you may be getting some audioblogs posted by either Bo or Ward. When our team departs basecamp for the summit I will probably be using the audioblog system to update you on our progress as it may be too cumbersome to send text updates!
Your Messages:
Carol:
Hi sweetheart. I am hopeful that you are safe and sound back in Columbia after your trip to California. I am so happy that you got to spend time with Kim and Dale and sound like they were great hosts! Look forward to hosting them at our place!
Just got back to basecamp and settling in comfortably! I was surprised at how much energy I had on the walk back to camp and am feeling 100% better than last week! Hopefully tomorrow will get some weather updates.
I love you and miss you terribly :>)
Pat :>)
AORN Friends:
Bonnie ... sounds like we have somewhat similar weather as it hails here daily, but thank goodness no tornados! I agree with you and Mat that I hope "the mountain is in a good mood for you". I need the stars to align, the weather to cooperate, and of course I have all the prayers and best wishes of my family and friends!
Thanks for all your support at AORN.
Canadian Friends:
Danny ... thanks for the update on the sat phone account. May need to revisit blogs as I noted at least 3 countries not accounted for (see message to Mr. Geuer's class).
Chris (aka gramps) ... great to hear from you and thanks for sharing your news from home! Sounds like Mother's Day was quite special!
Hope you have a huge time at Danny & Sherri's party ... wish I could be there! See you in July, and thanks as always for your support!
Grade Six Holy Name Class ... thanks so much for following up on this project! Great breakdown on the bloggers on the map and appreciate the statistics! I believe that a few countries are not counted (India, England, Finland) and we can revisit the blogs to update.
Hopefully before all is said and done we will have more of ther bloggers log on to let us know where they are from!
Thanks for all your help!
Columbia Friends:
Greg ... great to hear from you and thanks for the Jeff Gordon updates! Can't wait to get home and watch some races! So I guess you won't want any of your wedding presents wrapped in #24 wrapping paper!
I am feeling much better and ready for the push for the summit!
Say hi to Priscilla!
Deb ... your right, the party is over and now it's down to business! I appreciate the girls special prayers each night as they are well needed!
Now that Carol is back am sure you can get her back into the swing of tennis!
Palmetto Health Friends:
Beverly ... great to hear from you as I miss all my friends at Palmetto Health Richland. This climbing isn't for all, so glad that most can live vicariously through my adventure! Look forward to sharing stories/photos with all on my return! Thanks for your support!
USC Friends:
Liesl .. thanks again for the wonderful update. Hope you can visit the blog every other day or so with running updates as this may be over within the next 2-3 weeks!
All The Others:
Ken ... thanks for the weather updates! Where do you get your information, and how reliable is it! We look forward to updates here tomorrow! Thanks for your support!
Simon ... great to hear from you and glad that you get to read a little of my adventures, as more often we are reading yours!
Not long now and appreciate your support! Keep in touch!
Jean ... thanks so much for sharing your nursing story with us and am hopeful that this will help Bonnie to convince Cari to become a nurse! I agree that we as nurses need to do a better job of emphasizing the positives of our profession, as more often than not people will remember the negatives!
MC ... back in basecamp and as you said, close to "show time". Hopefully we will find out soon what our opportunities will be for a summit bid, knowing that weather is always going to be a major factor! Glad that you had a wonderul time enroute to Camp Muir ... brought back good memories! No worries about the sluggish legs, they will be there when you need them!
Thanks for the support!
Kurt ... glad to hear that you enjoyed very warm temps for Mother's Day (I miss the heat) and were able to celebrate Katelyn's birthday (happy belated wishes to her).
I am feeling much stronger and ready for a summit bid! Hopefully will find out soon what our opportunities are for climbing!
Thanks for the support and say hi to the girls!
Ann & Graham ... it's easier to smile than frown (and you use less muscles) so why not spread the cheer! Very happy to be here and glad I can share my enthusiasm with all!
Thanks for your ongoing support!
Jen ... thanks for your unfailing support as it is the "cheerleaders" like you that help us to move forward! It's been our pleasure and excitemeent to have family and friends along for this climb and we could not have done it without all of your support!
David (aka Demento) ... will have our MD listen to my chest with stethoscope tomorrow. The tickle is barely evident and was up high! Had great strength the past few days as ascended to basecamp. Feeling great compared to one week ago!
Mel ... Hi Mel, Thanks for looking up the airfare for Pat, not long now stay tuned for the action.
DD ...Hi DD, I must say I am a bit amazed about all the support and interest from work, didn't really think so many people would be following me, but really glad they are. I'm pretty focused, breaking it down into small parts so its not to overwhelming. Not guts no glory....... Mike
Mat ...Hi Mate, you are so right this is it, been along time coming. I am trying not to think about everything that I have done to get here and just concentrate on the week ahead. I am a little worried about getting sick but not a lot I can do but stay postive..... feeling strong and focused and I'm in a good space.....Bye for now MIKE
Penny ...Hi Penny, thanks for the note, nice to have all of you behind me, will have to have one hell of a party when I get home.... mike

Onward our Light for Nursing
Visitor — Tue, 05/15/2007 - 17:43Pat, I'm glad to see the snow again (I know, I'm really weird), but more importantly, thanks for giving the detailed directions on how to donate for your cause! I feel much better now that I have actually donated something to this. I'm not sure how long they will keep that open but as I can afford, I will contribute to it! I think if you can make the sacrifices you're making, certainly we can. Most of us in our lifetime will benefit from the services of a nurse and I personally would like to make sure more are trained! I do have one request...can ya try to bring me back some snow? hahahahaha

Visitor — Tue, 05/15/2007 - 18:06Hey Pat. I just wanted you to know that Smyth and I contributed to your worthy cause. Many in my family were and are both doctors and nurses (except for me...I'm too squeamish) so we realize how important your cause is to many who desire to become nurses. We follow your blogs daily and are excited that the BIG day is arriving! Good luck!
Good luck

jessnbob — Tue, 05/15/2007 - 21:36Morning Mike (or evening),
Interesting what you were saying about looking forward, didn't the sherpa say "always look up not down", surpose it is valid for lots of things in life and very valid for you guys now, We had a mothers day morning at your place on sunday, l got the kids to collect up the fejoas and then we set up a stall out the front of the house and sold bags of fejoas for $1 (half price down from $2) Ethan loved it, he made up a sign and we worked out his sales pitch, which was to ask people if they would like some fejoas, then hit them with the price once they said yes!, he sold some bags and had decided too spend the money at the $2 shop,
Thought l would share that with you.

Mary Clare Reinhardt — Tue, 05/15/2007 - 22:13Hey Pat and team
When I was driving to Paradise (to climb to C-Muir) I was listening to the "Best of Three Dog Night" CD. I kept playing the song SHAMBALA over and over... it just fit the journey of going to climb a mountain! It reminded me of your "On the trail again"! Here are a couple verses and a chorus for you guys!
SHAMBALA by Three Dog Night
Wash away my troubles, wash away my pain.
With the rain in Shambala.
Wash away my sorrows, wash away my shame.
With the rain in Shambala.
Everyone is helpful, everyone is kind
On the road to Shambala
Everyone is lucky, everyone is so kind
On the road to Shambala
CHORUS
How does your light shine
In the halls of Shambala
How does your light shine
In the halls of Shambala
I seem to be repeating myself but here's hoping that the weather window will hold out! Stay healthy and safe, climb strong and enjoy the views!

Danno — Tue, 05/15/2007 - 22:25Hey Pat, I did another more thorough count of the bloggers and countries. I counted approximately 210 bloggers, some are families but more than 1 person from that family has wriiten to you (ex. Kristen, Danielle and Deb). Out of the 194 countries in the world 8 are represented on your blog. They are Austrailia, Canada, Hungary, India, Nepal, New Zealand, United Kingdom and the United States. I included you and your team mates as bloggers as well.
Hopefully you will get the call soon to head for the Summit. Are you feeling better, do you have your strength back?
Safe climbing,
Dan

Anticipation......
StellarKart — Wed, 05/16/2007 - 02:50Hi again Pat, hope you're feeling fit and hearty back in Base Camp once more! The anticipation we are all feeling as we wait for the weather window is thick indeed. It's almost Go-Time, Pat! Get ready for the climb of your life -- express elevator to the top of the world, please!
Hey, on a local note for you, your University of South Carolina hosted a debate tonight between all of the '08 Republican Presidential candidates. I would imagine that created quite a buzz on campus! I didn't watch it, as my boy Fred Thompson hasn't yet entered the race officially yet.
Hey again, did the Nascar flag get to Base Camp yet?!? I'm picturing some poor FedEx guy in his uniform trekking from Lukla to EBC, package in hand, giving it his all to get that package to you on time!
Please keep us all updated on your schedule as soon as you find something out! You can do it, Pat! We are all behind you, praying for strength and safety and courage for you as you head up.
Cheers,

Visitor — Wed, 05/16/2007 - 03:30Pat,
Really enjoyed this latest pic! Wish I could "beam" myself up and join you in the tent! So glad to hear that you are feeling stronger and ready to head for the top! I'm pretty "knackered" myself after catching the red-eye from CA, arriving in Columbia @9am, then heading to work. I'm off to bed and trying to re-adjust to EDT! I'll write more tomorrow. We are all anxiously waiting with you for the summons to climb to the top of the world! Climb strong and stay safe. Love you,
Carol
PS Just heard USC Gamecock Svelle Newton is going to Canada to play QB for the Alouettes!

I hope you guys are prepared for the time of your lives...! not sure if you get this before you summit, but I sure hope that you are safe, sound, clear-minded and strong...!
Always in my thoughts I wish you a summit to remember, a time to embrace bonds, and a feeling that will last a lifetime!!!!

Visitor — Wed, 05/16/2007 - 06:21Hey Pat
love the picture of the ice falls before you as viewed from your tent. A bit ominous to me - but I am sure it is a vision of comfort/challenge to you to be within range of the "climb".
I went to a visioning exercise tonight for community projects. It was fun to hear what others come up with in their meditations. A few of the things (in particular) made me think of you. See what you think of the following (I thought they were fitting)
"Quiet rebellion to the accepted norm." (I relate to this one in many dimensions)
"Support can come from the most unexpected places."
"Massage the mountain, pray with your hands and feet."
I constructed this from a wonderful minister of Native American lore. She mentioned praying with your hands and feet as a metaphor for community service. I thought of you and the mountain before you - and the moods the mountain may have. I envision you climbing with the vision of massaging the mountain in all the right spots! But I also know it is not just about the earth connection, we must look to the sky and pray for clear passage.
May the elements be with you in spirit and the planets/stars be aligned soon! The right thing is happening. We are all with you.
PS - I am contemplating some philosophical pledge to your scholarship. I am thinking at least $52.80 since that represents my mile high city of 5280 feet. Then I will try to match that as I have 2 young men in college reaching for their own summit in their college pathways (but, I have to admit I am telling them about your adventures - but not encouraging them to follow your pathway just yet! Study first and get a job!). I am planning my strategy - so know that I support you and plan to pledge at least $100 to your scholarship fund. I just haven't gotten the logistics down yet to do it! I recently gave $50 to the AORN Foundation earmarked for Louisiana scholarship fund - so my first intent is to match that for your Summit Scholarship. Then I will go from there. Don't worry - some of us are a bit slow in actually posting our pledges!
Good Luck!

Fed Ex Commercial
Danno — Wed, 05/16/2007 - 10:21Hey Pat, I just read Mark's message from above. What a commercial that would make for Fedex or even Nascar. Can you picture Jeff Gordon duelling it out with another driver, in their cars racing to EBC to deliver the flag?
Keep safe,
Dan
FedEx got a wide coverage in the climbing season 2007
Mira — Wed, 05/16/2007 - 21:41Hi Dan, FedEx has already got quite a good coverage this season:)
they have delivered a package to Kathmandu where a sherpa picked up and took after my friend, Attila (he is climbing with Paul) It happened on their way trekking up to EBC, the sherpa reached him in Tengboche. Have a look the pic:
http://www.humanedgetech.com/expedition/hungary/images/20070407FedExTeng...
Also Paul wrote a short note about the FedEx delivery - check it out http://www.myeverest.com/node/623 ;)
Btw, I managed to do the same with an other package via TNT (unfortunatelly we do not have FedEx in Hungary - they deliver here, but do not collect anything)
Best, Mira
Fedex
Danno — Wed, 05/16/2007 - 21:47Thanks for that info Mira, since Fedex has already got enough coverage we'll have to work on the Nascar coverage.

Visitor — Thu, 05/17/2007 - 01:16My daugther, Ashlyn 10 years old wants to write to you...she is so interested in your climb to the summitt. Stay safe and I will continue to pray for you.
The following message is from Ashlyn:
Dear Pat, I am going to show your blog to my teacher and my class at Oak Pointe Elementary School in IRMO, SC. My class was studing about Mt Everest this year and I was shocked that one of my Mom's friends would be climbing up Mt Everest. I never thought I would know anyone that would try to climb Mt Everest. I would love for you to come speak to my class next year. Hope you have a safe and good trip. Please write me back, if you don' t have time that's okay.
