What a joy it was to sleep right through the night and be woken by the heat of the sun at 7.30. Another fine day's weather, shaming me into some washing of clothes for the first time (don't think about that too much), along with a wash and brush up of my good self. I've managed to charge up some relevant batteries too, which is a great relief again, but the problem of charging persists, and will do throughout the trip I fear. The email's failure to materialise has been a blow, for which I apologise once more, but I suppose in the political circumstances prevailing we must grateful for what we have maintained so far!
Currently I seem unable to send out texts on the phone, but DO receive them, "under supervision ", so don't give up on me altogether.
I've just had a fine game of Scrabble with, among others, Ran Fiennes, interupted by some autograph hunters, which made us all think a bit, as he really doesn't act like a celebrity at all, but he IS one...one of the "fans" was a Canadian, for example. For your info, Greg won the Scrabble!
Tonight is the big Liverpool game in the Champion's League, which I'll be attempting to listen to on the radio from half past midnight tonight, somehow. I'll be tired tomorrow, but let's hope it's been worth it!
Regarding the mountain,(remember that), it's a bigger waiting game than ever this year, as we all await the setting up of camp two, at 6400m, before we go back up again, hopefully in 3-4 days perhaps. Though the weather has been generally good here, I don't know what the wind has been like high up, so we just hope it's been kind enough to the Chinese to allow them good progress towards the summit. Then it's all systems go, presumably. Patience is required here, big time. I hope I have enough.

Ruth, hope you like the shot of Ted, on his/my sleeping bag today. He's a lucky mascot, and may yet make it to top, as he's tiny. He's fine, and keeps pinching the honey from the mess tent!
Simon and Vanessa, glad you're making use of the house, hope the heating is on, and that the weather is kind to you!
Jonny, I'll try and call again, but don't know your hours in the new job. You are in my thoughts lots, of course.
Sally B, if you "google" Sir Ran Fiennes and Everest Challenge you will find the relevant web-site, or there's a link from the Marie Curie site too. Or you could look at the Himalayan Trust site that I recommend!!
Debs, yes, I do get some texts, but as I said above, they don't let me reply well at present. The lads REALLY appreciated the love you recently sent them...careful girl.
Everyone at work, hope things remain under control with you all, it seems ages since I was grappling with the daily problems of the practice. I think of you often, if only to remind myself how lucky I am to be here on the more difficult days! Remember, I think climbing Everest is easier in many ways than regular work in the modern NHS...what a state of affairs.
Responses from Greg:

Wonderful to read your
Kendalwolf — Tue, 04/22/2008 - 12:47Wonderful to read your updates, we so enjoy them - and you are looking so well. The photos are super.
Sir Ran will in no way remember this, but I (Christine) have the unlikely honour of having shared a toilet with him back in Worcestershire in the late 70s ! He was the guest speaker at a WI conference in Malvern - at the lunch break the queue for the 'Ladies' was incredibly long, with no queue for the 'Gents', so as virtually all the attendees were female I decided it was safe to use the 'Gents' - however, I had forgotten about the speaker! He had a good sense of humour, and we both laughed at the situation....... I have always had a chuckle over the years when I have seen him in the news.
Hope Liverpool do well for you tonight - the reason for our Username is that we support Wolverhampton Wanderers (for our sins!).
Good luck for the next stage of your adventure.
Christine & Clive Carroll, Kendal
DAILY FIX
Visitor — Tue, 04/22/2008 - 12:47Hi Greg/Mike,
Just had my daily fix of your updates - I'm hooked, it's like watching 24! Not sure if you got my first message - suffice to say I find the pictures/text awe inspiring and so removed from the daily grind. From the mesages to Ray can I deduce he's a Mackem? Tell him he's nothing to worry about from 'us Smogs' - we're rubbish!Looking forward to the next instalment. Take care and best wishes,
Martin H

Northern Monkeys
Ann T — Tue, 04/22/2008 - 16:59just logging on this afternoon to see how you're getting on and to say how much i'm rooting for your northern monkeys in tonights match (don't ever ever quote me on that!!!!). fingers crossed for utd vs liverpool final. your pics are fantastic and i'm so glad that you're having good weather. it's been a lovely warm spring day here so i've had an excuse to wind my car windows down and put on some old skool proper cheesey tunes really loud! (apologises for terrorising kendal residents today!). to make scrabble interesting we invented a game at uni where you made up random words and then argued their meaning to asscertain the points. you may want to try it. it can get v fun espesh after a few bevvies (and altitude i would imagine). anyway, again am enjoying your updates and pics. keep going mike!!! x

Graham Watson — Tue, 04/22/2008 - 20:07Mike, Don't feel you have to wash on our account! Once a month whether you need it or not is surely enough. Wishing you luck and wondering what it's like to really be their as always.

Norman & Jane rooting for you!
MIKESBRO — Tue, 04/22/2008 - 21:02Hi Mike, still avidly following your progress and sending our best wishes to you from all the family and many more from Basingstoke!
It's superb to hear of your news even though it means you having a little discomfort but at least the goal is getting closer!
We were all watching Liverpool tonight and hope that you did manage to listen, at least, to some of it.
Keep your chin up and keep safe.
Love
Norman & Jane
Sandy Brown lives.....
JOHWIL — Tue, 04/22/2008 - 22:10The next time you cross the Icefall look out for John Arne Riise hiding within a crevasse. He managed an own goal tonight which ranks alongside Sandy Brown's classic - even down to the same hair colour !
I was in awe with the various shots of walking over these crevasses. It would seem myopia might be a positive advantage in this situation! There was a famous climber called O G Jones who was bespectacled. His myopia was said to be part of the reason for his excellent climbing skills for he would find himself having to cope with situations that he might have veered away from had his sight been better.
