Pheriche to Chukung

< Newer | Older >

Location: Chukung

Altitude: 4743m

Ama Dablam towers over us as we trek from Pheriche to Chukung this morning.Hi everyone, it's Airin Christa here, reporting on our trekking progress. Our trekking accomodation last night was what we can call excellent. The hot shower was invigorating. And only after we thought the sit down toilet makes this lodge perfect, candles were set on our table for a 'candle-lit dinner' and hot towels were handed to us. The thicker air gave everyone a good night sleep, apart from the repeated trips to the toilet, of course.

The late start was a blessing. We woke up at 8 and had our breakfast at 9, which consisted of surprise, surprise.. toast, porridge and eggs. After breakfast we were ready for our trek uphill from now on to Island Peak.

The day started a bit chilly, but we were heated up quickly by climbing up the first hill. We were then, however, rewarded by the magnificent view of the valley over the ridge and Island Peak at its head.

Today we walked pass Dingboche again on our way to Chukung. When we were not busy concentrating on our steps over the rocks and river streams, we stopped, looked up and saw grand mountains, valleys full of colourful shrubbery and gigantic boulders, and clouds rolling over the valley. It's nice just taking time to look around us and taking in the magic of the nature. We walked approximately 5 km in 3.5 hours today, gaining 500 m of altitude - from Periche at 4280 m to Chukung at 4743 m.

Once arrived at Chukung, we had lunch and Dave Armstrong talked us through the 'Summit Procedure'. This involved a list of what we need to do in the time counting down to our summit in 3 days time.

Following our lunch and settling down in our rooms in the lodge, some of us road-tested our big puffy orange down jacket by having a short wander outside. Our appearances in this big bright jacket caught the attention of two Nepalese kids, who were eyeing us from behind the lodge's stone wall. Rich and Dave Duncan made yeti-like gestures and noises, which were greeted with the look of bewilderment on their faces.

We spent the rest of the afternoon reading, playing cards, calling home through sat phone or just hanging around in the dining/sunroom. The afternoon was ended with a magnificent, picture-perfect sunset on Lhotse.

3 days until summit

Hey folks, 3 days until summit - less by the time you hear this. All the best with your preparations! ps- biki of the week this week was Sue Dean's home made yo-yos. They got a 10/10. No need to do any others cause these can't be beaten. ;)

Summit

I have just been watching videos of various groups ascending the summit of Island Peak; some accompanied with magnificent music others more life like with gasping breaths, fierce wind and the odd cough . Each one looked incredible and i know you are all set for the experience of a life time ,
Congratulations and best wishes
By the way I am afraid they have not installed the flying fox to get down , you will have to walk all the way but I am sure it will be worth every step.
Love J

The one with the magnificent

The one with the magnificent music will probably be the one posted by Paul Beck. One of the other groups that went up with Paul A and Dave A. There is some more info on that on MY EVEREST under " 5 On Island Peak "

Oh the heady heights!

Ray & fellow trekkers,
Impressed with your efforts to date in making it over 5,000 metres.
Hopefully you've acclimatised and your bodies are now ready to tackle Island Peak. We are following your progress with interest and look forward to hearing that you've all made the summit successfully.
Toddy work's going well in your absence, but we are looking forward to your return. JB reckons you're gasping for breath after swimming 100 metres at sea level, so we only hope that you're still breathing at the heights you're at!
Best of luck for the rest of your trek,
JB, Av & everyone at CW

Hi Elisa

Hi Elisa (and everyone else on the trek),
I have just been amazed at reading all your posts and seeing the wonderful pictures of where you have been travelling. Congratulations to you all for everything you have accomplished so far and all the best with Island Peak.
I'm at Mum and Dad's and Andrew, Claire and the kids have just left after having lunch here. Andrew was in very high spirits after the Dragons won the NRL grand final last night - it was close in the first half but then the Dragons scored all the points in the second half.
Take care, all our love and prayers,
Nicole
