Outsourcing Take II

< Newer | Older >

After refining our specification for the website development, we've now re-posted the project on Rentacoder. One significant change we've made is that we've classified it as a large project instead of a medium one. We're hoping that this will attract developers of a higher caliber to bid on it, but this will most likely come with a higher price.

Since deciding on WOMOW as the name of the website, we've also begun work on the logo. We had a couple of shots at this ourselves and then decided to also outsource this work. There's a website called sitepoint.com that has recently begun holding design contests. Here you can post a description of some design work you need done with a relatively small cash prize for the winner. Entrants then submit their concepts and you provide feedback encouraging them to refine their designs while the contest runs. So far we've had about 20 entrants of which 3 or so are quite good. Hopefully we'll get something we can use for the basis of our WOMOW logo.

Our business plan is progressing quite well too. I thought I’d done a reasonable job of this as part of my MBA subject but it’s definitely evolved to a higher level now. One of the key things we’ve added to the WOMOW concept is to introduce a fundraising concept. This was brought about through a discussion with David (our mentor for the competition) when he prompted us to think about what we were giving back to the community in exchange for the time and effort it will take to submit a rating. So, we’ve decided to allow people to run fundraisers through WOMOW. Instead of doing a chocolate drive or washing cars for a weekend, a school (or other organization) will be able to list their cause on WOMOW and then ask all of the students parents and friends to submit ratings, nominating that fundraiser as the one they want to contribute to. We’ll then donate $1 to the school for each rating they generate. We’re excited about this idea because it’ll help us get the volume of ratings that we’ll need, and help local causes that individuals are connected to and feel passionately about. These changes have now been incorporated into the new specification document.
