On May 12, 2007, a friend (Becca) and I went to Mt. Rainier for a training hike. Beck is training to climb Rainier in July for the Fred Hutchinson climb to fight breast cancer. I am training for my climb of Kilimanjaro at the end of June. We climbed to Camp Muir. The climb is 9.3 miles round trip starting at Paradise (trail head) with a 4,836 foot elevation gain. Camp Muir is situated at 10,188 ft. The summit of Mt. Rainier is 14,410 ft. We had a GREAT time! The views were majestic including sightings of Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Adams. As the clouds rolled in, you could see some of the surrounding peaks peering out from the clouds like islands in the sea. Absolutely stunning! Here are some pix. Click to enlarge. mc

Pumori — Tue, 05/15/2007 - 01:50Great pics, MC! I hope you'll be able to post when you do you Kili climb. Looking forward to your adventure. Best of luck to you.

Thank you, Shanda!
Mary Clare Reinhardt — Tue, 05/15/2007 - 06:47I didn't take any pictures on Rainier above 8,000 feet (aside from C-Muir) because I was focused on getting to Muir and turning around before the weather changed. So, I didn't shoot some of the best views of the surrounding peaks peering out through the clouds. It reminded me of photos I have seen taken from Everest! The majesty of those views is permanently ingrained in my mind.
Paul and I had talked briefly about me using a sat phone to blog from Kili. There won't be much time between his return from Everest and my departure for Kili. But I will definitely post a short TR and pix if I don't blog during my climb.
Btw, I enjoy reading your posts, your passion for the mountains, especially the Himalayas is wonderful.

Climbing
Pumori — Wed, 05/16/2007 - 04:59Trekking to Everest Base Camp gave me a whole new appreciation of climbing at altitude. I live at 3,000 ft. but I can feel it when I go to 9 - 10,000 ft. I hear Kili is brutal, but I think you will do fine. The view from the top must be awesome!
I've always had an interest in climbing, and wish I could've done more when I was younger, but my asthma held me back. I'm content now to be an armchair climber, although I'd love to do some climbs like Mt. Shasta if my injured knee ever heals. I want to see what it's like to use crampons and an ice axe. (After training, of course.)
Anyway, I look forward to following your adventure, even if you can only post sporadically. Good luck to you!

Hi MC
aeronik — Sat, 05/19/2007 - 03:04Finally putting a face on all those nice posts you send me. Your pictures are great MC. I wish I would live around a place like this... I see that you are working hard as well. It will benefit in any way... Physical, mental and spiritual!!! I wish you the best of luck on all your preparation climbs as well as your climb on Kilimanjaro. I will be watching for your updates on the forum or anywhere else and looking forward to see your pictures. It's going to be fun to compare our different points of view. Send some from Mt Whitney too, please...

MC,
I enjoyed reading all your posts in the spring during Paul's (and others) quest for the summit of EVerest. I THOUGHT that I would be notified via email every time there was a post on the MyEverest.com website (because I did in the spring following Paul, TA, and the others), but now I'm discovering that I have NOT been notified when others (like you and Kade) are doing your climbs. I am going to try to get "up to speed" and read all of your posts and the messages accompanying them.
I would love to know if you are climbing or trekking at the moment.
Thanks, Jill!
Mary Clare Reinhardt — Mon, 10/15/2007 - 07:19I almost missed your message above!!! I've always enjoyed reading your posts, also! Thank you for your interest in what I have been up to regarding climbs. I just posted a complete TR on my Kili climb (your post inspired me). Here is the link. I am hiking Mt. St. Helens on the 27th of this month and hoping to do some local climbs here in the NW to prepare me for Pico de Orizaba and Iztaccihuatl in Mexico.
Hope all is well with you!
MC
Delighted
