Flash ou Le Grand Voyage

Charles Duchaussois

A french man recounts his trip through Europe and Asia in the late 60's in order to get to the capital of the hippies, Kathmandu... and how he got badly into drugs, and how he got rescued "in extremis"...  This is a book I read when I was a teenager and when I was using drugs myself. At that time I wanted to go to Kathmandu, but not for the same reasons that brought me there last year. When I was a teen, I wanted to go there because I thought it would be cool to smoke hasch and Opium in a restaurant in Kathmandu... with the hippies! When I started planning the trip to EBC, I re-read that book because I remembered how I felt about that city, when I was reading the book.

When I was in Kathmandu last year, I went on Freak Street and saw some of the places that Charles Duchaussois was talking about in his book. It used to be the area where the hippies would hang around, before Thamel was more popular with trekkers.

More books

Would you mind I recommend some more books?

During my stay in England I kept buying books, just could not stop this habit:) One of my favourite books is Matt Dickinson's The Death Zone: Climbing Everest Through the Killer Storm. The context of the book is that the author is there to cover another Brian Blessed attempt on Everest. What ensues is a truly frightening account of what happens when things go wrong in extreme conditions. Other books in this genre can get a bit heavy in the philosophy of such things yet Dickinson writes with pace and with meaning.

Also Judy (TA's site editor) mentioned a series of Everest books written by Gordon Korman: "The Contest", "The Climb", and "The Summit". They are a great read for both school kids and adults alike as she said. They explain a lot about climbing, particular the south route of Everest. I should also get these;) All the best with your preparation for Kili, Mira

Funny...

Hi Mira,
Funny how you mentioned Matt Dickinson's book about Everest. I'm actually reading it now. That's why I didn't put on my page yet. I was waiting to get it done. It's also about the storm of 1996, but from the North side. I was also buying books from Amazon before I left for my trip last year. I kept buying them, and also when I was in Nepal, I found a lot of interesting books about mountains and mountaineering. Thanks also for your suggestion. I'll check right away on Amazon to get them. Sometimes there are good deals on used books.
Thank you!
