I entered the Mt. Whitney lottery and just received my permit! The dates are June 9th and 10th (a weekend.) I have an opening if anyone is interested. mc
Wow, MC...Whitney and then Kili. Good plan! I've always wanted to climb Whitney (I live on the other side of the Sierras), but didn't want to lug a backpack up there, and didn't think I could make it all the way up and back in one day. Is that what you're planning to do, or will you be carrying a pack?
Best of luck to you.

I appreciate your good luck wishes! I will leave Whitney Portal on Sat. 6/9 and camp at Trail Camp 12,000' (3,658 m). On sun. 6/10 I will hopefully summit and hike back down to Whitney Portal. I summited Whitney back in '87 and it was one of the best two day hikes I have done. I recommend fall; I hiked in Nov. (in shorts) and the colors were fantastic. Got lucky with the weather; days were sunny and warm. The night was quite cold.
Where is Mount Whitney exactly and what kind of mountain is it? Altitude, terrain, where are going to sleep? I would be interested in having more details.
Hi Aeronik
Click here for a great link with info on Mt. Whitney. Basically, it is 14,505 feet (4,421 meters) some will say 14,490 something. It is the tallest mountain in the contiguous U.S. and located in the Sierra Nevada range in California. I will be taking the Main Route and sleeping at Trail Camp (12,000 feet). The terrain is beautiful; from trail head (Whitney Portal) you will pass many trees, a few meadows, surrounding rock and mountains. There are quite a few clear lakes that you can see from the trail. Lone Pine Lake, Mirror Lake and Constellation Lake are just off the trail. Past tree line, there are jagged rock formations that are spectacular. It is a gorgeous area!
I just got back from Mt. Whitney in the Sierras. I had the most amazing time. I drove down from Vancouver, WA on Thurs./Fri. (long drive)! I took an acclimatization hike to Lone Pine Lake (on the Main Mt. Whitney Trail) Fri. afternoon. Started my hike on Sat. morning with perfect weather. Left Whitney Portal (trail head) at 10:00 am and arrived at Trail Camp (12,000 ft.) at 5:00 pm. Set up camp and we got lucky...no wind! The next morning (Sun.) I left TC at 7:15 am and arrived on the summit at noon (14,505 ft.). I was feeling surprising well and stayed on the summit for an hour. It was so rewarding and the views were tremendous (the word grandiose kept coming to mind). Again, perfect weather all day Sunday. I had the best time and met some great people who I have only known through a Whitney Portal board (great web-site for any info on Mt. Whitney). Here are some pix. Just click on image if you want to enlarge.
