Location: Namche Bazaar
Altitude: 3440m
Local Time: 9:00pm / April 4
Weather: Warm Day (70's) and windy
Today was a rest day and we stayed in Namche Bazaar. A leisurely breakfast was followed by a moderate hike up a local hill to have mid morning coffe at a restaurant that had an unbelievable panoramic view of snow capped mountains. The distant Mt. Everest caught our attention as the jet stream winds (100 mph plus) could be seen creating a cloud that covered the summit and spilled across the sky. Each time I gaze on this mountain I am humbled by the enormity of it's size, and left to wonder if I am capable of reaching this summit. I am hopeful that this will be the outcome, but have promised Carol that should anything go wrong or I find myself in a precarious situation I will turn back. I want to live a full life and would rather try my hardest and know that I gave it my all ... than to be injured or perish due to pushing forward when I should be retreating. A fellow climber said today that one of his proudest moments was knowing to retreat off a mountain when conditions turned deplorable ... great advice!
I could have sat all day and every other day at this location as on every turn of the head there was a spectacular view of towering mountains. Carol said that I should have approached a certain credit card company (Mastercard?) to appeal to them for sponsorship and use the fact that I would be climbing Mt. Everest as a potential commercial which would go something like this:
Cost of mountain climbing gear
$5000.00
Cost of lessons to use gear
$1000.00
Cost of flight to Kathmandu
$2000.00
View from the top of the world
Priceless
Well, I was not on top of the world today, but indeed the view was priceless!
I am impressed by the number of tourists/hikers at this altitude as you need to be in pretty good shape to hike these trails at this altitude. I would highly recommend any and all to look into a hike into Mt. Everest basecamp as the beauty of the mountains, the richness of the people, the variety of foods, and the ease of accomodations enroute make for a great vacation with little planning needed ... just a good set of lungs!
Tomorrow we have a long hike ahead of us as we head up the trail to Pangboche at 3930m. I hope that this post finds all of you well and look forward to replying to your recent comments within next few days.
Take care,
Pat :>)
Your Messages:
The following format will be how I respond to your messages as they will be displayed within the text of the update. Unfortunately I will not be able to respond at present time to those that wrote me in the last two days as I let my battery get too low on my pda ... and it wiped out my settings on the pda. Thank goodness Paul had helped me to do a backup when I visited with him on 3/31 in Kathmandu so we were able to use one of his replacement batteries and restore everything! So, what I have lost is the latest lists of responses on the blog site that were sent to me by my brother Danny. I will have him resend those responses from the past few days and will play catch up with responding to your comments. Technology is great when it works ... but when in the middle of the mountains there are not many resources when problems occur! I had read all the responses last night and made notes on some earlier blog postings of which I don't believe that I responded, so can respond to those few ... and again will play catch up with all others over the next few days!

Visitor — Wed, 04/04/2007 - 15:47Just saw your latest update with picture of you on the rope bridge. Boy, that brings back memories. Also wanted to let you know that Paul is also in Namche-arrived on April 4 (per blog). I love your comments in this update about returning safely to me and what is really important in life. Have a great adventure but remember-it's all about the journey, not the destination. I hope we can go back to Nepal and trek to base camp TOGETHER! I love you so much and am happy you can keep in touch with me and everyone with the daily blog.
Don't worry about individual responses-everyone is content just to send their wishes and you can respond generally!! Don't burden yourself with responding to each and every one.
Still waiting to hear from Thuraya about the minutes. I'll get it sorted out today/tonight.
Back to all this paperwork-wish I was there!!
Carol
Great potential Mastercard commercial
Mary Clare Reinhardt — Wed, 04/04/2007 - 21:21I like it!!! There is nothing like a great view!!! I do hope you will get to see the view from the top of the world! Continued success to you, Patrick. Your fellow climber is correct...the greatest mountaineers are not necessarily the ones who have climbed the highest and most difficult mountains. The greatest mountaineers are the ones who challenge themselves on the highest mountains but know when to turn around. Great example, Ed Viesturs.
Stay safe and climb strong, MC
p.s. I second Carol's motion about feeling the need to reply to individual messages at this time in your journey. You have an astounding goal in front of you and we are here to support you. It is rewarding enough to know that you are receiving our messages!
Extra credit
Danno — Wed, 04/04/2007 - 21:25Hey Pat, I put extra credit onto your phone and you should be receiving an SMS code to activate it. I also sent you an e-mail with instructions as well. Take lots of pictures, safe climbing.
Dan
Good photo Pat!
Sandra D — Wed, 04/04/2007 - 23:57Pat, nice photo over what looks like a swinging bridge! I second Carol's advice to you and it's good to know that you will heed it! I also agree with Carol in that it's enough of a treat to be able to send you well wishes on each step of the way on such a momentous climb. I really am enjoying your journel with descriptions of the climb. A response is not necessary and just adds more work to you when you need your energy and focus for the climb ahead.
Stay safe!
Sandra

It's been some time since we last spoke. Just thought I would let you know, I've certainly been spreading the news about my cousin climbing the mount everest. I told one teacher at school (cause now I'm an EA working at the high school) and said, wow, must be incredibly fit to go on this journey, his response was, no I think it is more spirit, you have to have the spirit to do such a journey.
All the best, pat, nice to see you become such a successful person. Keep on truckin, were routing for ya.

Continued Prayers
Joan — Thu, 04/05/2007 - 02:28Thanks for the great photos and descriptions. It really does make one want to take a vacation to Everest just to see the beauty. Glad to hear that 'retreat' is in your vocabulary and consideration. As Carol said it's about the journey. I don't know if you realize how much you are impacting other people's lives through your quest. You are an inspiration to so many. I am surprised at how much your quest has inspired me. I thank you for that.
Prayers continue for your safety and successful journey.
Love,
Joan
Ad idea
Ann — Thu, 04/05/2007 - 02:47Hi Pat!
I loved your MC idea! Too bad they were not aware of how great your idea is!
Have fun on the trek, and cool to meet up with Paul and family!
Best, Ann and Graham

runnorm — Thu, 04/05/2007 - 12:12In EverestNews today there was a photo of the view you where talking about. You must be getting excited with anticipation by now. I know you have done the training and the preparation so don't worry, just let it all come to you. You have your priorities in order so I know you will always make the right decisions on Everest. As always, my prayers are with you. norm ps Love the mc thing. You should send it in.
The Journey
Bill and Michele — Thu, 04/05/2007 - 12:36I was so glad to read yours and Carol's post that it's about the journey not the destination, the goal is reaching the top but if conditions aren't right, it may take more courage to retreat (good advice from your fellow climber). I'm following your path on google earth and saw the picture of the bridge that Paul took too, scary, is that the only way to get there? I guess you are not using any pack animals or vehicles at this point to carry supplies. Come back safe, knowing you, there is still so much more for you to do. You are a person who has a lot to offer, teaching others may be your most important mark in life. Teachers are great, nurses are great! Michele
P. S. No need to post back, I'm checking in daily and enjoying your updates along with everyone else, technology is great:>)
