May 31, Leaving Kathmandu (this time I have a ticket!)

Goodbye to the "Du"

I went to the airport last night in the expectation that I would be flying to Hong Kong with Scott.  Well, after a 1 & 1/2 hour discussion with four Dragon Air employers we had determined that: I did indeed have a ticket on June 6th home, I needed a paper ticket to get on an earlier flight, I didn't have a paper ticket, I could go to the Dragon Aior Office on Sunday (it's been closed the last three days) and try my luck, and there was no way I had any hope (in hell) of getting on last night's plane.  So, I came back to the Courtyard Hotel and phoned my travel agent and my wife from the roof with the news.  I had thought 2 days to change a ticket in Kathmandu was optimistic, and I was right.  It also has been an unusually odd few days for Kathmandu in that the King was kicked out of office after 240 years on the 28th, many shops and businesses have been closed in anticipation of rioting ( which hasn't materialized on a large scale), yesterday was a national holiday, currently there is a gasoline shortage in the city, scheduled blackouts continue daily, today(Saturday) is the usual day of rest for everyome...so it has been difficult to get certain things done in the last few days...BUT, Sarah called at 5 am this morning (the night manager got me out of bed as my room phone isn't working) to let me know I am flying to Hong Kong via Bangkok today!  There you go, the tale of the elusive air ticket home.

Thanks to Sarah and my awesome travel agent Martha in Toronto for arranging the ticket.

So... I should be leaving today on my long journey back to Vancouver Island.  I love Nepal but I am eager to be back home, I am ready.

Angus

PS   Mr. Ruskay, how's the Rugby team doing at STS?  Our two varsity SLS teams (boys and girls) are both in provincials.  We hope to see you and the boys on the west coast next year on tour.
