Internet Connection

When your out on your journey or trek, how do u find a internet connection?? Like being on Mount Everest. How do u find a connection to the internet? Or how do u find one in the wilderness?

Getting an Internet connection in the wilderness

To get an Internet connection in the wilderness generally requires the use of a satellite phone. There are 3 main satellite phone companies - Iridium, Globalstar and Thuraya. Not all are equal, and only Iridium provides worldwide coverage. I usually use Thuraya, because it has coverage in the parts of the world that I normally go to (Nepal) and its cheaper and faster than Iridium.
It costs about $1.50 per minute to connect to the satellite and get Internet, which is quite expensive. Because they are not quick either, we can't send really big pictures as these take too long to transmit.
In order to upload to this website, we use a pda (HP Ipaq model) which can use the satellite phone as a modem to connect to the Internet. Once connected we can send and receive email, although for some reason email isn't very reliable. Uploading to MyEverest seems to be much more reliable.

Hope this helps,
Paul.
