Heading Up To Camp 3

< Newer | Older >

Just a short note to let you know we are finally heading up to camp 3. Communication restrictions are still in place for a few days. Hopefully when I come down I will be able to send a bunch of postings to fill in some of the missed days.
If all goes as planned we leave for camp 2 early May 9. We will spend the night of the 9th and 10th at camp 2 and then move to camp 3 for the night on May 11. We will spend one more night at camp 2 on the 12th, and be back in base camp on the13th.
Wish us luck.
Photos seem not to work very well these days. I will continue to try.
Huggs to Susan, Amy, and Colin.
Scott SS.

Since I will be up at the higher camps on May 11 I will say HAPPY MOTHERS DAY in advance to my Mom and to Susan. Hope you have a great day.
Love, Scott.

Barb, thanks for the message. My throat is doing much better now, but I'm sure it will take a beating when I go back up to altitude. I am enjoying LOST. It is a good show for up here. There are lots of characters and it is a fairly complex story line. Angus is hooked. We have a portable DVD player with a 6" screen and portable speakers. We pull four chairs around and sit close and it works.

Kathy & Wayne, glad you enjoyed the last posting. Sorry it was so long. Once I can do them on a more regular basis it should be better.

Hi Nathan, hope you had a great time at Disney World. What was your favorite ride.

Hi Maggie, glad you had a great birthday and a fun time at Disney World.

Karen & Phil, thanks for following. It is always great to get your messages. Please tell your church to pray for us. We need all the help we can get. Maybe you should pray for good weather on the North side.

Chris, you are making me a little envious thinking about you having coffee in the sun with the gopher. I did not bring a video camera with me, but I have shot some video with my digital camera. The weather generally approaches us from the Bay of Bengal. So far it has been exceptionally good. If there were no climbing restriction I think we would have very early summits this year. The jet stream has been close to the summit for several days producing close to 100mph winds, but it is backing off. The long term forecast looks pretty good for us.

Hi Susan, Amy, Colin, MorMor, Pops, and Uncle Johnny. Hope you have a great time in NYC. Wish I could be there.

Paul, thanks for your messages. I have found the Compact Flash slot. It was pretty well hidden. Thanks also for the news. We are pretty much in the dark here. All we get is rumors. Please do that again some time.

Chris #2, thanks again for the great message. I will take your suggestions into consideration.

Mary, great to hear from you. It makes me feel good to know you and the team are doing such a great job while I play "Grounghod Day" here on Mount Everest (think about the movie with Bill Murray; every day is the same). I would love to go for a bike ride right now. Check out the new HD Cross Bones Soft Tail. I think maybe we need a company bike.

Go, Scott!!

Scott:
We're all excited to hear that you're moving up in the world. We're also glad that your throat is better. Hopefully it won't bother you too much at the higher altitudes.
Nathan says his favorite ride was at Epcot called Mission Space. He doesn't like roller coasters (tells me over and over, "Mama, I like low and slow") but Mission Space is a simulator that takes you in a space ship, blasting off from the earth and landing roughly on Mars. We would go on the green (easier) side. Nathan really doesn't like anything with too much motion. Maggie . . . she's my dare devil. She'll be my adventure-seeker.
Keep going, Scott. We're with you the whole way and know that you are ready for this. In the meantime, we'll do our part and keep up the prayers, both for the team and for good weather on the North side.
Phil, Karen, Nathan and Maggie

The Company Bike

Hey Scott,
Love the idea for a company bike but I'm really not the Harley type - can't quite see myself in a Frontier Group do-rag and chaps. I would like to propose the Ducati Monster for your consideration though. It would allow you to re-create the feeling of 100mph summit winds any time you wish.
Glad to hear things are moving forward for you. We are really enjoying reading your descriptions and can't wait to see the pictures and videos.
Cheers,
Mary

Greetings Scott...

Hope that much is going well and that the climb to Camp Three was good and that you and Angus returned to Base Camp safely. Today's news (Thursday) reports the summit has been gained by the Olympic celebrants and that full access has been hopefully beenrestored for all those who have been patiently awaiting. May fine weather conditions be present for your summit visit. Thank you for your continuing interesting narratives through this time delay period. All the best for you...

Hooray . . . off to Camp 3!

Scott:

Hooray, the Chinese have summitted and you can finally head up the mountain! We are still anxiously following your climb, and starving for details, however boring they might seem to you! Hopefully you will be able to post on a daily basis now.

We have sent you a package (it arrived in Kathmandu on Tuesday) which is hopefully making its way via yak train to you right now. Maybe by the time you return from Camp 3 it will be waiting at your tent! Funny - UPS couldn't guarantee me same-day delivery!! Ha ha.

When you are slogging up the Lhotse Face, can you try to remember how many sections of rope you have to clip and unclip onto? My students are curious, since we are reading the part in our novel where the climbers are attacking the Lhostse Face, and one climber has to unclip for another climber to pass him. If you remember when you get back to Base Camp, let us know!

Cheers from Liane and all the kids at QE
