What a new world we found ourselves in last night, here at 3900m in a comfortable small lodge again. We had the famed chicken and chips, and as described by the others previously, before we had finished, seconds, then thirds of chicken and chips were offered...big pieces of chicken too, like at home. We enjoyed a beer too. Almost paradise really.
I slept deeply (Nadir says I snored, disgraceful!), and have had a good breakfast followed by a shower...more bliss.
We've heard one sided radio transmissions from our camp two today, which felt odd as from down here we can just see the top part of Everest poking over the Nuptse-Lhotse wall. All very mysterious, technology.
We are very aware that any issue that delays the "first" group will knock us on later, but so far, so good it seems.
I was keen to save weight in my bag on the way down, so brought no camera with me...you will have to make do, perhaps, with an "old" picture stored in the pda this time.
I feel pretty weakened I must say, though the huge meal must've helped me, and there's more to come! We are expected back at BC on the evening of the 20th, and I have to decide on whether to split the long journey back(leaving tomorrow, therefore), or do it in one go, risking undue fatigue. I did the trip in one go in 2006 after seeing son Tom off on a helicopter from around here, but that was near the beginning of the trip, when I was fresher! Difficult decision here to be made.
My lips are still pretty sore and cracked, I must say. Bad mistake that was.
It's quite intimidating looking up to the summit from here...nearly 5000m above us...have a think about that, bearing in mind we are already at the height of a respectable alpine summit here. We may be there around 26/27th! I can just see the spot where I turned down in 2006, which helps in a funny way to reassure me that the top isn't as unattainable as it looks!
One step at a time should get us there eventually. Sounds simple enough then.
Messages:
Sue E, glad you are so gripped, but please, don't keep mentioning food...it's cruel!
Bill, I think your weight loss plan sounds better than mine by quite a way.
Ruth, I'm glad you're feeling a bit better again...if you think about it, it's what usually happens isn't it?
I thank you for your good wishes, as always. I don't know if my brief ITN interview ever got transmitted, but it was likely to be some lunch-time bulletin in the end...a moveable feast. I've seen the editted tapes, you won't have missed much anyway!
Pam, I can't quite imagine it either, or at least, I can't imagine how I'll FEEL..that's part of the fascination. It'll partly be affected by how many other people, if any, will also be around.
Jacq, we had a good laugh at your ideas, thanks. A less Elvis-like person than me will never exist...surgery won't help that!
Sandrine, lovely message, lovely english...I don't even know what "abnegation" is all about myself. Nadir was vert excited, and the rest of us enjoyed our hugs, thank you...it's been a long time!
Mary Clare, sure hope you're right about summitting, I appreciate your hunch.
Harry, the reporter, Phil Wray-Smith is a really good bloke, very professional with it, sits in our mess tent...their task is all about Ran, of course, not us.
Here's a plea to everyone!
If there's anyone out there who's been watching this blog for a while, wondering whether to send a message, but felt a bit unsure or similar, well PLEASE send one soon...as we are running out of time!
When we set off for the last time towards the summit, I'll probably try and carry the pda and phone to camp four at the col (and the phone to the summit, maybe), but as battery power will be a premium, updates may be brief, our responses to messages almost non-existant!
P.S. We've decided to set off back tomorrow, splitting the return journey into two days.
Responses from Greg:
Hi Elaine and Heather, hope all is well, I think that I will be at camp two on my birthday so any celebrations will have to be on hold. Enjoying our stay here, very basic but plenty of fried chicken! I think our summit day may be the 26th, but things may change. Good to hear that Minx is well behaved and that she is respecting your lie-ins! Will try to phone soon, lots of love, Greg xxx.
Hi Sarah, thanks for your message, it all seems very close now, who knows what is about to unfold, hopefully we will all summit but it is the uncertainty that fills the mind in the run up to it. I guess the hardest part now is keeping the mind strong with positive thoughts as we prepare to go back up the mountain. It is strange to think that I could be back at work 3 weeks tomorrow if all goes well, but i've got a lot to do between now and then! Best wishes, Greg.

Hi Darling. Well i'm here in Pengbouche filling my face with as much food as I can. If we are having a weekend of take aways, remember NO CHINESE! Tell Mel i've got compo for high up, It's at Base Camp and Camp 2 that we struggle with some of the food, same as 2004. Things are coming to the end now just a bit of luck wth the weather and we will be back on our way home. Can't wait for all that DIY waiting for me or perhaps you will have sold the house and bought the one in Greystoke by the time I get back? See you in a short while. Lot's of love Ray X X X

I have been following your blog with great interest down here in Melbourne, Australia. I will keep my all my fingers and toes crossed for you that all goes well in the next crucial days. ricktaylor — Sun, 05/18/2008 - 15:58Hi evreybody!
Been following your progress closely over the last number of weeks. Excellent set of updates coming from you all. Makes you wonder how we all coped iin the 'olden days'! Glad to see you are all feeling pretty up beat and have finally got a summit day planned. It all sounds like a world away from the North side as you said it would be.
I've been doing quite a bit of training for the quadrathlon in July and have just bought a house with Inge - hope you all make it back safely with all fingers and toes and some good stories for the housewarming!
All the best and be safe. There's a mini bottle of champagne in my flat waiting to be opened on the 26th! Time to get it on ice!

Mike-your last-but-one post,
billrea — Sun, 05/18/2008 - 16:29Mike-your last-but-one post, in which you wrote about what it would feel like to be at home and remembering all this, made me go searching for this poem. You may well know it, but I like it a lot and thought it might cheer you. Hope the trip back up to BC goes well after your chicken and chips fix.
Space, and the twelve clean winds of heaven,
And this sharp exultation, like a cry, after the slow six thousand
feet of climbing!
This is Tai-Shan, the beautiful, the most holy.
Below my feet the foot-hills nestle, brown with flecks of green;
and lower down the flat brown plain, the floor of earth,
stretches away to blue infinity.
Beside me in this airy space the temple roofs cut their slow
curves
against the sky,
And one black bird circles above the void.
Space, and the twelve clean winds are here;
And with them broods eternity-a swift, white peace; a presence
manifest.
But I shall go down from this airy space, this swift white peace,
this stinging exultation;
And time will close about me, and my soul stir to the rhythm
of the daily round.
Yet, having known, life will not press so close, and always I
shall feel time ravel thin about me;
For once I stood
In the white windy presence of eternity.
The Most Sacred Mountain

Simon E — Sun, 05/18/2008 - 16:59Hi Mike
Sounds like a sound call taking two days to retrace steps back to BC.
Your piece about heading home was interesting. It must be strange to "rehearse" the first steps of that journey at this time, the crux of the trip.
Anyway the chickens of Pangboche will be glad to see the back of you once more... or what's left of them.
All's well at this end. Don't waste your energy on worrying about us.
Tread lightly Mike. Many here are behind you... perhaps you can see that through these messages.
Cheers
Simon

Mary Clare Reinhardt — Sun, 05/18/2008 - 19:23Hey Mike~
It seems that you are as ready as one can be and that you have done all of the physical and mental preparation, the training and you have acclimatized well. Wishing you all the best!!! You can do this! You are living a dream that most people can only imagine. Good luck to you!
Best of the best,

Visitor — Sun, 05/18/2008 - 19:33Hi Ray sounds like your having a better time now that youve had chicken and chips Ha Ha! Had my mams and dads surprise Golden Wedding party last night, its was fantastic! Jan came along with Gill for a couple of hours which was nice. John had hangover this morning, which I know is very unusual cause its usually me! Visitor — Sun, 05/18/2008 - 20:13Hi Mike !
Thanks for my "lovely" english, you're nice (i lived in Hull for 18 months and i enjoyed Yorkshire so much...).
Abnegation is self sacrifice to something or somebody. We can say that you quite sacrificed your lips to Everest Mount... Didn't you ?
Anyway... You're all very courageous.
You can tell Nadir it's ok if he prefers BC Fried Chicken to my home made Coquilles Saint-Jacques... I won't be mad at him about that. ;-)))
And don't worry Mike, i won' t use your blog anytime to send personal messages to my boyfriend because you will get bored with it...
So, even if i don't write every day, i will still read your posts with a lot of interest.
Friendly hugs to all of you.
Love to Nadir.
And you all take care !
Bisous.
Sandrine.

Visitor — Sun, 05/18/2008 - 20:29Hi Greg and all the gang up there,
I feel like I know you all from watching the excellent blog and messages every day. It's hard to imagine what's going through your minds at this stage but I'm sure Greg is as determined as ever and success is looming as large as Everest itself . I hope all stays well for you all as you start your journey back up again - we are all glued to the site at work, in fact it's the main topic of conversation between the therapy managers, rehab, domi and respiratory team. Don't forget the "debrief" lunch Greg - the Goshawk has got a plate with your name on it!
See you soon and good luck - Di. x
Watching your blog
Tichick — Sun, 05/18/2008 - 20:38Hi Mike,
I have been following your blog from the early days of trekking in to base camp. I have very much enjoyed your writing and the long entries with lots of background are great.
Relax, get strong, have a good walk back to base camp and then go for it! Third time's the charm, as they say. I'll be following along.
Jean, enjoying it all from New Hampshire in the USA
Final push
JOHWIL — Sun, 05/18/2008 - 20:39To you all - best of luck with the weather and yourselves as you gee yourselves up for the home stretch. If good wishes have anything to do with it then you will be able to summit easily with much to spare. Thanks for sharing all your experiences so far -it has been riveting.
Breathe Easy Halton , myself and Derek Twigg managed to do the Wirral Way today , all 15 miles of it . I felt it was an achievement to do it without oxygen and 2 blisters ! Approximately 5000 took place which reminded me of the queue up the Icefall. There were ice cream vans along the route but no chicken and chips - perhaps you have exhausted the world's stocks !
Good luck and God bless
No need to spend battery time on me
john

paul-janet — Sun, 05/18/2008 - 22:59Hi Mike,
Caught up on all you "blogs" now we are home from Scotland - I wondered what we were missing while we were away!! Glad you have enjoyed your well earned rest (and the chicken!). Now go conquer your mountain - our love and best wishes will be with you every step of the way - right to the top this time!! Take good care of yourselves. Love Janet & Paul x

Visitor — Mon, 05/19/2008 - 07:44Hi Mike,
Been lurking for a while, reading your blog. Time to come out of the woodwork, as requested. You've signed me off twice now as fit (physically, at least...) to do a 1200km cycling event. And you clearly thought I was barmy at the time? I've got news for you, mate!
Best of luck, I really hope this goes well for you. And thanks for taking the time and effort over the blog - it's absolutely fascinating.

May the Gods be with you on the final ascent.
Thought you should know all your patients are missing you and asking after you. If their wishes were realised you should be floating to the top of the world!
Due to vacate the Dr Michael hotseat tomorrow ready for your return. Been alot of fun. Thanks for asking me.
Stay safe
