Everest finally in our sights!

< Newer | Older >

After 13 days we finally see the awesome North faceDATE:9/13/07
LOCATION: Everest Base Camp, Rongbuk Monastery. 1633 ft
EVENT: Trekking 7 hours to base camp

Rocky here. Others are out either sleeping or waiting for Everest or Chomolanga (mother goddess of the universe) to appear from behind the afternoon clouds. Arrived to camp by the monastery to the sound of the monks hitting the gong above camp. 13,000 feet above us, the top of the world. We are surrounded by legends, history, dreams, disasters and spectacular beauty. We are now part of those hopes and dreams.

Tommorrow we walk as far as we are going to go toward Everest, into the morraine at the base of the Rongbuk Glacier. Beyond that we would be on the ice.

There will be one more post to the web after this one on the trek. We hunker around a 2 by 3 inch screen each night to see who has written us. When you are this far from home, it is warming to hear from you all.

Tommorrow, weather willing, the classic monastery in front of Everest shot. Stay tuned.
