Day #21
Location: Mt. Everest Basecamp
Altitude: 5364m
Local Time: 10:45pm / April 17
Weather: Cool (40's) windy/snow
Today was a rest day and we used it wisely to take care of chores. I washed all my dirty clothes (something that Carol won't let me do) in a basin by my tent and did as the locals do and laid the clothes to dry on the rocks! Next came tent management and I organized all my gear into what goes higher on the mountain (down suit, down sleeping bag, snow goggles, high altitude gloves, etc). Additionally I made a list of photos needed for summit day ... and the list is long! I have a responsibility to sponsors for photos, and then there is a long list of others such as getting a picture with my hometown Almonte High School Thunderbolts hat/tocque. I will need to be very organized on that day and will rehearse the event with my climbing sherpa prior to that date. I have two digital cameras with me and hope to entrust my sherpa to take most photos.
After tent cleanup it was time to wash and shave and this is done with a bowl of warm water in the open. Due to the intense sun and breeze no drying towel is needed!
This evening we were treated by our team member, Bo (from the Great State of Michigan), to a viewing of the movie Top Gun. Only one out of fifteen had not seen the movie, but all hung on the edge of their seat as Tom Cruise defeated the Russian pilots.
I appreciate all of your comments on Mike and I avoiding the avalanche yesterday and want to reassure all that we are in good hands!
Your Messages:
Carol:
Hi sweetheart.
Thanks for booking our summer vacation to Colorado. I look forward to our camping/hiking vacation and can't wait to see the mountains. I am getting quite used to sleeping in a sleeping bag and actually find it to be very comfortable. Don't know if I will be able to transition to a bed again ... just kidding!
Love you and miss you terribly :>)
AORN Friends:
Kay ... great to hear from you and glad that you are following along! Mike is from Auckland and a pilot for Air New Zealand. He has lots of pilot stories and keeps us on the edge of our seats! Thanks for the words of confidence and say hi to all at AORN.
Rose ... thanks for keeping everyone up-to-date. I promise not to have too many more wild adventures ... that are within my control. Enjoy the star gazing with Lilg and look forward to seeing all of you in July ... and a Fat Tire or two!
Nat ... great to hear from you and thanks for the reminder re: taxes. I did have to get a lot done before the trip, and signing the tax form was one of those things that were done. Say hi to all at AORN ... and would love to coordinate a call into an AORN BOD meeting if AORN could be a sponsor of the Summit Scholarship!
Bonnie ... thanks for all that you do at AORN. I am hopeful that my experiences here on the mountain can lead to more support for the Summit Scholarship, and recognition for AORN. Not all of our days will be exciting as sprinting away from avalanches, but every day is an adventure! I love all the song lyrics and appreciate it very much. Thanks as always for your support and look forward to sharing the adventure!
Canadian Friends:
Pat ... great to hear from you and thanks for the best wishes. Continue to check in when you can!
Kevin ... congratulate Tristan on her 5th birthday for me!
Desi ... please say hi to Matt for me and congratulate him on his first communion. It snows here lightly each day and is relatively mild. Say hi to the kids for me... Go Sens!
Johnny ... yes, our sprint across the football field would have made Mr. Curry proud! Carrying a backpack and running in mountain boots/crampons made the dash a little more challenging!
Columbia Friends:
Deb ... thanks for the prayers, well wishes, and updates. Happy Birthday!!!
Dave ... we try to avoid using Diamox as much as possible and most try to acclimatize naturally!
Lyn ... as always, thanks for the warm wishes and energy, greatly needed!
Alma & Corky ... great to hear from you and did not know you had access to the internet? Thanks for keeping me in your prayers and for spreading the word of the adventure. Look forward to lots of home made cookies on my return ... and that dowry!
Norm ... yes, being secured to a rope does help somewhat with the fear of heights ... thank goodness! More challenges to come!
Greg ... I am hopeful that this avalanche will be the extent of our excitement for the trip ... short of summit day! Thanks for being such a good neighbor and friend and for checking in on Carol.
Rahn & Smyth ... thanks for the words of support. Hope you can keep Carol busy while I am gone!
Kristen & Danielle ... yes, it was scary, but did not have too much time to think about it as we just ran for our lives! Say happy birthday to your Mom for me! Good luck with Dutch Fork and remind Danielle to use suntan lotion!
Susan ... thanks for the quote and very appropriate. Struggle and endurance are definitely a part of this adventure!
Palmetto Health Friends:
Sandra ... thanks for the continued prayers as I used up a few yesterday! Tomorrow we hike to another area for altitude gain and should be no worries. Extra calories are always welcome here as we burn alot!
Allison ... thanks for checking in and feel free to drop in/out whenever acording to your schedule. Thanks for spreading the word about the scholarship as I hope more people will contribute. Thanks also for the prayers ... greatly appreciated!
USC Friends:
Jane ... great to hear from you and thanks for the updates. Glad that all is well in my absence and appreciate all your help. Sounds like your trip with the students was interesting and remember from last year that it was busy, busy, busy! I am sure that you are excited that the semester is over soon! Keep in touch!
Nathan ... thanks for the updates on the conference. I really enjoyed it last year so can understand somewhat of what you experienced. Best of luck in your remaining NURS 231 tests and keep me up-to-date.
Ashley ... thanks for keeping things organized. Keep me up to date. Hey, did you get the powerpoints, etc. from Linda yet?
Anita ... great to hear from you and know that you would appreciate my cause! It has been my pleasure to teach at USC in the College of Nursing and to be able to advocate for nurses is a thrill! Congrats on your lifestyle changes, your position, and your desire to return to school. Say hi to Brooke for me ... and I appreciate the quote!
LW & Senior Nursing Students ... I do miss all of you and hope that classes are going well. It's my pleasure to be advocating for nursing!
Alan ... thanks for the offer to have me help Coach Spurrier with sprint training, but I am sure that he has everything in control. Yes, hopefully this will be the last sprint, as the climb to the top may be a crawl! Thanks for the NURS 231 updates!
All The Others:
Bill & Michelle ... I am not sure what the blue rectangle shapes are on the google earth map, but am sure that Paul could let you know. Keep tuned in to the findinglife site as it should be very informational also!
David aka Demento ... I go to sleep listening to avalanches and the sounds last quite along time in the night! We are not in their paths, so all is well! Souns like you had a great ski vacation ... wish I could have joined you! Carol has booked our trip for the last 2 weeks of July ... will give accurate dates later!
Carolina Jim ... glad that you are able to follow along! I am writing a book about this journey as well as the 3 complete year long trips through 53 countries ... and hope you will eventually read that one too!
MC ... thanks for including the quotes, great stuff! Yes, adrenaline can help you to do amazing things ... the fight or flight response!
Wendy ... great to hear from you and glad that Mike called you prior to the avalanche blog as I did not want to worry family and friends. Mike is doing well and has become a good friend. We have tents in close proximity to each other and lots in common (I have my private pilot license, am a nurse as you are, and love travel and adventure).
Bobby & Jess ... great to hear from you and glad that I can help in keeping you up-to-date. Mike has read your message and believe will be in touch vie regular email.
Lorraine ... Mike has read your message regarding good karma and I am glad that I have been able to keep all of you connected!
Bonnie (KY) ... thanks for your note and unfortunately there is no avalanche control here ... just mother nature!
Kim ... glad to hear that you are following along and am happy that Carol will be visiting you soon. Hope you can keep her busy and her mind off my climb as at that time we may be experiencing some of our most challenging scenarios!
Agustin ... great to hear from you and thanks for spreading the word of my adventure. Thanks for the good vibes my big/little brother!
WP ... thanks for ther info on your solar panel experience. I plan to send mine in for a refund and agree that they probably can't take much stress. Thank goodness there are others here with panels so I can charge batteries as needed!
Paul ... as always, great to hear from you. Sounds like both of us swap stories of how each other has had an influence on us! I am sure that you have already influenced someone to choose the nursing path, and if not, no doubt you have the passion to do so!

Welcome to the world
jeffholland — Tue, 04/17/2007 - 19:48Jeff, here again from the Antartica trip in December. Nice to see you know the hight of base camp in metres. Maybe the lack of oxygen will go to your head and you,ll start using degrees C like the other 192 countries... :-)
In many ways i see you as where i hope to be 2 or 3 years from now. i told myself if i couldn,t do the 7 summits i would try and visit every country instead. i later thought, why not try and do both. So now i,m in Croatia, a small country in Europe, my country no. 130, taking a break from climbing.
Pat, keep safe on the mountain. Most people take 3 atempts before they summit. Any fool can summit. Only the smart ones summit and get back down. If you can,t summit, it,s OK, it,s a learning experience, the stronger and more knowlegable you,ll be for your second attempt next year or the year after.
Anyway, i told all my friends you are my inspiration, so do your best!
I,m following you all the way.
Jeff

Laundry
Visitor — Tue, 04/17/2007 - 19:59Hi Pat,
This might be a duplicate message, I was interrupted here at work and believe my message may or may not have gone through.
It must be world-wide laundry day as Donna is doing laundry today also......
differant method however, no rock dryers.
We are thankful that you were aware of what was going on and were able to out-run the avalanche.....hard to imagine or invision.
Looking forward to reading about your next adventures now that you are climbing above the basecamp.......Donna & The Girls say Hi and send along prayers for your continued safety & success.
All the best to you,
Kurt. K.
Back to basics
Mary Clare Reinhardt — Tue, 04/17/2007 - 20:40Hey Pat
Isn't it great to do all the everyday things such as shaving, washing clothes, sleeping, etc. without our modern day conveniences? Don't get me wrong; I love technology and feel very lucky to live in the time period that we live in. It's just nice to get back to basics! Some of the best times of my life have been on white water canoe trips with my family. We would go for a week at a time down beautiful, scenic rivers with everything we needed to survive in our canoes. We would not see a soul and it was so peaceful. Although the adrenaline would kick in down the class 3+ rapids! I hope to be able to continue my family's tradition.
Again, so far so good. I hope your next venture through the Icefall won't be quite so exciting!

CathyandKev — Tue, 04/17/2007 - 21:38Hi Pat,
Kevin and I have been closely following your progress. Our thoughts and prayers are with you always. Yesterday's update was amazing...I cannot imagine being that close to an avalanche. Paul's update came a couple of hours ahead of yours. He mentioned the big avalanche on the icefall and that there were 3 climbers up there; but that word at basecamp was that everyone was okay. Needless to say, when your update came, and with that header, my heart skipped a beat! Your account had me sitting on the edge of my seat. (Reserve us a signed first edition when you publish your "Quest" adventures!)
I have a request. In today's update you've mentioned planning the pictures that you will take. Please add one for me in there as well. I want to paint it. (Carol & I have briefly talked about my painting, and she kind of hinted that that would be a good Christmas gift. I agree with her! )
Happy trails and God bless, Cathy & Kev
Our prayers are with you
Visitor — Tue, 04/17/2007 - 22:50HI Patrick,
I'm back home now from the Boston Marathon. My stepdaughter did great - her goal was to finish - but she did very well.
I'll spread the work on how you are doing to our periop nurse friends. Keep safe and keep warm. My thoughts and prayers are following you. Kay Ball
What a list!
Sandra D — Tue, 04/17/2007 - 23:56Pat, you have quite a list of things to do once you get to the top! The thought flashed through my head as to whether or not you would memorize your "to do" list or have to tuck it inside your down suit to pull out on top. I posted your picture and information re your climb on our patient's bulletin board. They spent some time yesterday asking me questions. They're very interested and I've encouraged them to log on and track your progress and also to consider the Summit Scholarship. It would be interesting if USC could fill in the contributions on the Summit Scholarship as they come in (like United Way). It has been on one number since before you left.
Be careful with your climb! I imagine that you are already climbing since it's 8pm here!
Stay safe!
Sandra
Our thoughts and prayers are with you
Visitor — Wed, 04/18/2007 - 00:04Hey Pat. It's Sherri from my parent's place. Mum and dad (Mary and Dave) have been following your blog since day 1 and they wanted to send their warm wishes and to tell you that you are always in their prayers. Be safe!
You seem to be having better weather than we are. It snowed like the dickens here yesterday. Where is spring? I tried to send a message yesterday but my computer was causing me problems. I'm glad to hear you and Mike made it safely out of danger ... avoiding the avalanche.
You seem to have all the comforts of home ... who can watch movies while trying to fulfill a dream of climbing Mt. Everest at whatever altitude you are at now.
Please be careful! We all look forward to reading your blogs/update of progress.
Sherri, Mary & Dave

High Boss
Rporter — Wed, 04/18/2007 - 01:40THX for the day of rest. We ALL needed that after the avalanche! Would you mind giving me a quick refresher on some things please; When are you planning to summit, what route are you on & is there a suggested website for a visual of your progress? Sorry I know this was all published before but I will be darned if I can find my notes!! I'll try my best to have a synopsis when the next person at Headquarters asks about you [which happens daily!] GO PAT! luv, rose :)
Re: High Boss (route and timetable)
kwsallenger — Wed, 04/18/2007 - 12:31Rose and all,
There's a diagram of the route Pat will follow on his amercan.us Web site: http://amercan.us/_wsn/page15.html
They will follow the classic southeast ridge route, close to that used by Hillary and Tenzing in 1953.
The schedule will be very very dependent on weather. Basically Pat and his expedition members will work higher and higher to complete their acclimation to altitude, then when the conditions are right (probably between May 10-25) they will go for the summit. Sample timetable from another expedition: http://www.mountainmadness.com/newsroom/newsroom.cfm
Dispatches from Pat's expedition are here: http://ice8000.com/c_pub/expeditions_news/everest_07_.php
Lots of news from Everest and the Himalayas here: http://mounteverest.net/
Hope this helps!

Summit Scholarship
Danno — Wed, 04/18/2007 - 10:42Hey Pat, I sent Liesl Downey a message from SC College of Nursing to see what the latest total was for the Summit Scholarship, it hasn't changed for a couple of weeks now. She e-mailed me back and said that she would find out the total asap, I'll let you know when she e-mails me. I found her name on the Summit Scholarship site at www.sc.edu/nursing/SummitScholarship.html.
Safe climbing,
Dan

Hello from an old running buddy
sunedog — Fri, 04/20/2007 - 11:43Pat -- This is John Schafer. We did some running together in the 1990's for Team In Training. I saw the article about you in The State newspaper a few weeks ago and wanted to write to say hello and great luck. When people seemed amazed we were training to run marathons, I have more than once told them a marathon "was my Everest." Didn't ever imagine I would one day email a friend actually in the process.
My 6 year old just said good-bye to me on his way to first grade. I told him I had a friend that, right that moment, was climbing the highest mountain in the world and I was sending him email. I told him the mountain is Mt. Everest. His eyes got real big and he asked me, "You mean they can Never Rest while they're climbing?"
Go for it on "your Everest!"

Bonnie D AORN - Denver
Visitor — Mon, 04/23/2007 - 05:32Hey Pat
sending you greetings from my nest in Denver, having recently returned from New Orleans. Bev K, Patrick and I attended the Louisianna State Council meeting on Saturday and I have fond memories of our 2005 Congress in New Orleans - when the city was red hot. It was a bit less "bustling" this time around - but the spirit is still alive and well and the AORN members there put on a great education program and showed up with professional pride for AORN. The ambulatory surgery FASA event was good too - interesting set of politics and competition seeking better care for patients.
Today is Earth Day and my son's 22 birthday - so I am thinking of you in terms of Earth Day and also the will to make a difference (which is similar energy of both my sons - well, okay, myself too). Go for it! We are just not climbing the mountain as you have chosen to do! I am glad to read your recent blog about the nursing shortage and all the followers you have backing you. I am going to a women's conference this weekend in Vail and will again be thinking of you and the mountain you are facing (me at 9,000 ft and you at 21,000 feet - yikes). I will mobilize more than 100 women to pray for your safety (metaphysical group - several of them into Native American culture). Know that we are with you there on the mountain - but realistically, we are not facing the elements first hand as you are! Keep your strength up knowing we are all behind you sending love and courage and visions of safety. I love hearing the passion and energy you are sending us through your blogs.
Keep your chin up and your spirit flowing!
Bonnie
