Chukkung 4750m - Audio update

< Newer | Older >

This is a new audio update from Mike Brennan climbing Mount Everest.

This is the text of Mike's audio message:

Hello everybody this is me at Chukkung at 4750m.  I felt lazy today and decided to do an audio blog, it is a lot less hassle actually than typing stuff out.  We have had a really good day today, we were walking up here, going up 800m, to Chukkung.  It had really sounded quite an intimidating next day and I wasn’t sure I would manage that actually.    We set off about 9:40am on another beautiful day and in a pretty good time.  I thought about tortoises and hares with our team.  I decided I am not so much a tortoise as an old hare.  The other guys are really good.  We all got to the top in reasonable time and have fantastic views.

I was here two years ago and the weather was indifferent and the skies were grey but this time it was just spectacular.  From the top you can see Lhotse, the 4th highest in the world.  You can see Makalu looking enormous which is the 5th highest.  You can see Cho Oyu the 6th highest.  You can’t see Everest because we are too close really but you see the Lhotse wall.  It was just fantastic.  We came down really quickly as you hoped and views like this make it all worth while after all that running around.  We are in good nick, feeling good.  Still coughing a bit, I am not too chuffed with that but I think it will sort itself out.  I didn’t cough at all during the night which is a good thing.  Tomorrow the weather is closing down.  I am standing outside.  God, I am looking forward to being in a tent where I can send all these updates without having to go anywhere and having to cower outside to get a signal and struggle with the hail when the clouds come down.  We are hoping it will be nice again in the morning as it tends to be.  There will a big long traverse of around 3-4 hours to a place called Tukla which is a little bit lower actually than where we are sleeping at now.  We will then only be a couple of days away from Base Camp which we are looking forward to getting to and finding out what’s what.  Get all our gear in one place and to stop living like gypsies really.  No offence to any gypsies.    So there we go, I will try and do a proper update tomorrow…and take it from there.  Bye now.

Hi, it's me!

Just heard your 2nd audio, you don't know how great it is to hear you, and all about your news, and reading it each day, you sound really good, in great sprits and why not too, it's getting more exciting down here to, watching your progess. I was feeling low, last couple of days, but now I'm smiling again. Anyway I'm writing this, with the sun beeming in my window, just been to mum's for tea. Anyway I recon you should think about writing a book! seriously' how great would that be"THE GREAT ADVENTURES OF M.B" should be a best sellor. I'm kind of hoping I might get a little reply to this (as last time) because I think you said as you get higher, could be more tricky to reply' (or did I get that wrong?). Cant believe how wide your supporters are, been reading some other mess's and it's really interesting.(from all differents places, I mean.
Did'nt know you supported LIVERPOOL', There are Brill, my brother travels all over the globe to watch them play. Anyway hope your hearing some new jokes, to have to tell me for when you get back. GOOD LUCK FOR THE REST OF YOUR ADVENTURE, KEEP SAFE, and keep the audio mess's coming. will write again soon, (tring to keep it to once a week)
Going to have a 'stella' now. ALL MY LOVE
RUTH XXXXX Always thinking of you xxxxxxx

I remember Subuteo!

Hi Mike well done on your efforts. Mum would have been so proud! You know we moved to Fenland (no hills let alone mountains), well we saw a strange sign going through a small village one day. It read :- 'Pidley Home of the Mountain Rescue Team'. Is n't that strange? It turn out that it appears to be a charity helping people in the area.
You will be pleased that I finally gave up smoking (8 weeks now). I feel so much better .I reckon I could walk up Holywell Hill now!!!
All the best From Autie Sue and Uncle Colin
