Camp two again, at last!

< Newer | Older >
A beautiful view back to Pumori from the icefall this morning. This is a typical view in the middle icefall, taken today. It goes on and on, up and down, no rhythm .

Today was one hell of a day! We left BC at 5 o'clock this morning, a still, clear day(great for summitting!). I tried to go deliberately slowly as my pack was somehow too heavy again, as I was trying to take everything needed for a summit bid in one go (because you never quite know what might unfold).
I mostly went throughthe icefall with Nadir, Ray and Greg moving way ahead in the end. It wasn't too busy in there today, no real queuing, and we reached the top in four and three quarter hours, just as the boiling sun hit us. After that, I was baked, and very slow! We reached camp one(now just one sad tent) in six and a half hours, a bit poor....I blamed the bag..!
After a brief rest the weather changed for the worse with fairly persistent snow and cloud. At least we avoided the heat though. So off we set again, onwards and upwards, through the cold snow...I seemed painfully slow to camp two, 3 hours in the end, and good old Kenton won some "Brownie points" by coming down a few hundred yards from the tents to meet me and take my rucsac from me. Good man.

Boy I was tired, almost as if I'd not been up here earlier. Well it was 12 days ago, and acclimatisation changes wear off pretty quickly. Thank you China. We are now at 6400m, having started at 5340m.
I was revived speedily with the best bowl of soup we've had out here, and I've had a nice chat with my tent mate Mark, an Aussie. We don't mix much at BC, due to the group size. Him and his mates went up the Lhotse face today, but were repelled before reaching camp three itself by falling rocks(and drink bottles!) . Apparently the actual climbing on the lower face wasn't too difficult, just very busy!.

We will rest tomorrow, and maybe try the face the next day...there is snow forecast after that, unfortunately, so we may be straight back down again, which is bit soul destroying.
I'm told most of the others were also pretty shattered on arrival here over the last few days, so some consolation there then.

Messages:;

As we're up here, and batteries are precious(and cold), I'm going to be brief!
There were lots of messages for me yesterday, which was nice, they
really mean a lot to me(and Ray and Greg too), so basically thanks to all of you! Good luck to Man U for this afternoon, I think they deserve the title really! I can't find any live footie on world service tonight, which is a blow as I carried the radio up here especially.
I know Greg will be trying to ring Heather tomorrow, as it's her birthday on tuesday, and he's worried because we'll be up the mountain again on the actual day.

Hi Ray

Hi Ray,

Football update first:

- Man U won the Premiership title by beating Wigan 2 - 0, thanks to a dodgy penalty by Ronaldo and a goal from Ryan Giggs.

- Sunderland lost at home to Arsenal by a goal to nil (what a surprise) - things really have to improve next season! It's not all bad news though as Newcastle lost at Everton! Boro beat Man City 8-1!

- Birmingham and Reading ended up being relegated along with Derby. Fulham somehow managed to survive!

Nothing much happening at work - Ania's back from maternity leave, Amrit (our new HDO) started a couple of weeks ago, and Alastair is rejoining us to work in the Network Team. The lads have been in this weeked to relocate the build area into the computer room - you won't recognise the place when you get back!

The Web site has been great for keeping in touch with events and Mike Brennan has done a fantastic job in relating the news to eager followers back home. I don't know how he manages to do so well using a PDA in those conditions.

I hope you and everyone else are fit and well and ready for the challenge ahead. Keep safe and enjoy the journey.

Dave

For Mike Thinking of you

Hi Mike ,hope things are going well and you have lots more delicious soup to warm and nourish and reach all the parts that others dont. I miss the back room chat - nobody seems to have the time for it now- very busy interviewing potential practice managers etc. You dont need to know that though. Good luck .Will keep you in my thoughts. Liz

Contemporaneous Records!

Hi Mike,
Karen gave me the web address and I'm very excited to read about your news. Extremely impressed by your record keeping - have you been on an RCGP course since we last worked together?
I'm interested to know what I.T. kit you've got - what are you writing on and what camera are you using etc?
Anyway, I hope everything goes well for you and you achieve your dream. I'll buy you some beer to help you get your weight back on when you get back to Kendal.
Cheers,
Jim.

Tortoise

Hi Mike~

You can always blame being a bit slow on The Bag in my book!! On any mountain over 14,000 feet, I call myself the Tortoise. And I console myself by the fact that the tortoise always gets to the finish line!

Great pix of Pumori and the middle section of the icefall. Beautiful!

Hoping good weather will ensue. Climb safe, climb strong!
