Anticipation

< Newer | Older >
We are filled with anticipation because the day to start our climb dawns tomorrow.  Everyone arrived safe and sound.  We've all got our fingers and toes crossed that Nancy's bag decides to join us on tonight's flight though we have enough clothing to outfit her if it doesn't.  Emotions are running high with excitement and nervousness.  We kept busy through much of the day with a jounrey into town and checking out gear.

This is my second attempt at a posting since I lost the first to a power failure so please forgive if it is a bit brief.  The sat phone is working so I'll be able to update the website daily assuming the tech gos continue to shine.

The traditional market was a cacophony of colors, textures, sellers, and produce.  Pyramids of tomatoes and onions stood beside dunes of millet and maize.  I've enjoyed ugali, the local staple thick porridge for my last two meals.  It transports me right back to Zimbabwe and so I can resist.  Ugali is sometimes made from caszava and sometimes from maize.  Yesterday on our walking exploration of villages just outside Arusha, we sworn we would not imbibe in street food until after the climb.  That quickly went out the window when it was nearing six and we were offered some deep fried casvava to try.

Our walk took us high into the foothills of Mount Meru.  We met many children along the way and were transported on the voices of two choirs up into the heaven like clouds surrounding the mountain.  Many of us neared tears as we took in the music with our entire beings.  It was great to get out and stretch our legs and breathe the mountain fresh air outside of the city.

We begin our climb of the Machame route tomorrow and we're glad you are coming along with us.  Everyone is doing well and is ready to take on the challenge we've prepared so well for...pole, pole (slowly, slowly) will be our mantra.

Take care,

TA

Song POLE, POLE

Hey TA and team

I wrote a quick and very simple song while I was on the Lemosho route of Kili. The melody was inspired by a song bird of the rain forest at Big Tree Camp. I taught it to my guide and he has passed it onto other guides, porters and clients. Of course you won't get the full impact of the lyrics without the melody. You'll have to use your imaginations! Its a folk song. Here goes:

POLE, POLE

Pole, pole, taking our time.
Pole, pole, it’s all o.k.
Pole, pole, everything’s fine.
Pole, pole. Pole, pole.

(Sung several keys higher)
Pole, pole, moving along.
Pole, pole, up and then down.
Pole, pole, singing our song.
Pole, pole. Pole, pole.
