We are now in a small lodge at Lobuche, at around 4850m, having broken our journey back to BC as planned. The walk here took maybe four and a half hours, which was about the same time as I took GOING DOWNHILL two days ago!
This tells you, and me, that even that brief sojourn down at Pangboche has done me good, which is great news really. Obviously it takes more than two days of good eating(and drinking!) to reverse many weeks of weight loss, but it's a clear change in momentum for me, which I must try hard to sustain over the next week. I even finished a whole plate of egg fried rice at lunch-time in a lodge, and it's weeks since I did anything like that...I really am a lousy eater out here.
So, it occurs to me I have been like a watercolour in the rain, I've been fading away strikingly, but I feel as if I've had an injection of colour again. This is hopefully going to help me last the pace over the final week or so.
Andre and the Aussies are hopefully now at camp three, moving to the Col tomorrow etc. The weather up there has looked pretty grey and windy today actually. We wish them luck. We miss Andre.
Tomorrow will be a 3-4 hour day to camp, then we will be carefully thinking of the last things to pack/carry up for our summit bid. You don't want to forget anything that may turn out to be crucial.
So how do I feel now?
I feel ok. Not as strong as I'd like, but definitely ok, and that's good. No bad cough, no bowel upset, certainly no excess fat compared to seven weeks ago! I am determined to deal with the physical distress that's undoubtedly coming over the next week, and indeed any mental stress due to delays that may yet catch us too. Hope we don't get much of the latter, we're tight enough on time for flights and work as it is.
Messages:
Paul A, thanks for the updates on other teams, and, of course I wish Angus and Scott all the very best for their effort in the next few days. You'll notice Paul, that we actually went right down to Pangboche, due to a favoured lodge as much as anything, not Pheriche, which we find a bit if a hole!
Caroline, thanks for your lovely message and your good memories of base-camp. Mine are somewhat mixed of the place so far...I hope to make the feelings more positive in the next week, that's for sure.
Wendy, thanks for the compliment, and I may take you up on the chicken offer!
Alison, lovely message, I'm glad you have felt so involved! Just need to finish the job properly now.
As you have read today, the chicken's certainly done something good so far.
Sue, positive as ever, I'll be seeking all of that I can feel, for sure. Thank you again.
Finally, thank you Jill for your continued encouragement, despite what I still realise must be quite a bit of tedium shining through.
Responses from Greg, whose birthday is on 23rd!!!....
To Dave and all the guys at Adapt Outdoors (off Williamson Square), many thanks for all your support and help in preparation for my Everest expedition, you guys are the best in the North West! Best wishes, Greg.

the man in the ... — Mon, 05/19/2008 - 13:58Dear Dr Brennan,
hope you're enjoying it (although i realise that is not the object of the exercise)
Good luck on the summit attempt but more importantly than that come back safely as i still need a GP (not in the least bit selfish!)
As a motivation tool, keep thinking of the size of your overdraft and how much bigger it will have to be if you have to go back for a 4th attempt. I only wish i felt as 'well' as you do to contemplate climbing Everest (although clearly 'well' is perhaps a somewhat imprecise definition as to how you are currently feeling but you get my drift!)

Visitor — Mon, 05/19/2008 - 14:06Hi Mike,
Well ... you are certainly at the "last orders at the bar" time of this incredible journey; after all your weeks away, and the many many months of background planning, fretting, and preparation. Your attention to detail throughout your blog has been fantastic, allowing us all to share the grrrs and hmmms so eloquently.Thankyou. I have felt humbled by your dedication and struck by your dogged determination, two experiences we dont get alot of these days! I really hope that everything comes together in the next week to allow you a safe and rewarding summit. Keep chirpy and enjoy/savour as much as you can. Hopefully the chicken/beer will be restorative, and the couple of nights in a real bed a delight.. despite the snoring for Nadir! Take care etc.. Jackie x
Hello Mike !
Visitor — Mon, 05/19/2008 - 16:14Me again, sooner than i thought... Sorry ! ;-)
Nice to hear that you feel ok. Chicken and beer worked well indeed ! Who said lager was an unhealthy beverage ? We've got now a scientifical proof that it is not... ;-)))
Good packing, and fingers still crossed for good forecast !
And same old friendly hugs to all the team !
Sandrine. :-)
Baisers @-------)
Mind games
Visitor — Mon, 05/19/2008 - 16:54HI Greg, I'm hoping this message finds you in a good physical and psycological state. The good news is that according to my latest edition of poultry weekly, chicken when taken in conjunction with chips has been shown to massively improve performance at high altitude. So you can put away the powdered Unicorn horn for the time being. Also just to let you know that there is a HUGE footy game this week... yes the mighty Leeds play Doncaster at Wembley in the play off final.
There's too many people to mention individually who send their best wishes, but B4 staff and the Porters especially wanted to pass on their regards.
Keep positive,
Bolton Si.
Best Wishes
Audrey D. — Mon, 05/19/2008 - 18:07Dear Dr. Brennan,
I am a 'silent' reader of your blog and thought perhaps it was time for me to send a quick note of well wishes! Have been reading for several weeks now, and check on you daily! Best wishes for safety and success in the days ahead!

Hi ya Ray
Caz — Mon, 05/19/2008 - 19:22Hi Ray, hope you are well and a bit rested after going back down to Lobuche. I know we keep saying it but not long now. You seem like your fitness is good, i know you'll be focused as you've always been strong minded, that's why they call you relentless Ray. Hope your face isn't too burnt, you'll not have to have a chemical peel facial when you get back. Don't forget to put your sun screen on. Me and Pip had a Genesis weekend: And Then there were 3 (Snow Bound) and Trick of the Tail, FAB!!!! Claire said there was a good picture of you on the website, I'll have to get them printed off. Thinking of you and all the team. Get up there quick and back down even quicker. Take care and lots of luck and love Jan & Pip xx woof woof
Good call to rest and eat down valley!
Graham Watson — Mon, 05/19/2008 - 20:22Hi Mike,
You sound very positive about your rest and eating and it strikes me that I was in the same way before my second (successful) BG attempt. First time I felt I couldn't afford to ease off, second time I realised that every bit of R&R is what you need before the last push. I hope that's a good omen and I'll be thinking of you (although frustratingly I think I will be out of touch on your big days as we will be on holiday in Scotland in the van).
Good luck, hope the weather is kind and you feel good (enough to make it)!
Graham

Mary Clare Reinhardt — Tue, 05/20/2008 - 01:26Hi Mike~
Glad you are feeling fairly well as this will be so important for your summit push. I enjoyed your reference to an "injection of color". Reach deep into your reserves of strength for the coming days. Fingers still crossed for a good weather window.
Best,

Hello Mike
Gerry — Tue, 05/20/2008 - 01:37Mom has been keeping me posted on your adventure. There has been so much in the news about Everest of late. It gave me pause to think that a relation of mine is high up there trying to realize a dream. It actually made me look at my life for a minute or two. I wish you the best and may you thaw out quickly on your return journey. There are some magnificent mountains in British Columbia, Canada as well. No urge to climb them though. Your Canadian cousin, Gerry
Schedule?
Pumori — Tue, 05/20/2008 - 01:44Mike, I'm glad the trip down-valley has been beneficial. I'm wondering if you know your schedule yet? I'm leaving on the 21st to go camping near Yosemite for six days. I have no way of following your climb, but will catch up when I return home. I'll be rooting for you the whole time. Summit or not, be proud of your accomplishment and remember it's the journey, not the destination, that counts. (To a Zen master, maybe...hahaha!) I wish you the best of luck. Take care and come back safely.

Etape
colinhurst — Tue, 05/20/2008 - 08:03Went very well thanks Ray. Room for improvement for next year though, especially when we have "relentless" to drag us along. Mr Mold turned out to be a bit of a dark horse in the drinking stakes - his favourite whiskey is brewed around the corner from Pitlochry so he had a few!
Good luck for the next phase and look forward to seeing you back here. Got some planning to do.
Ray - Good Luck
davest — Tue, 05/20/2008 - 08:52Glad to see that you are still striding up and down the mountain at high speed - must be all the chicken and local beer. Hope that you are well, lips recovered for your missus, and that the weather holds for you to make it this time. See that upon your return you are to become Lord Greystoke! I retire on Thursday, so will miss your hopefully triumval return to work; I am certain that I sponsored you so will leave my money for you with Ian Mankin. Thanks for all your help and friendship over the years. What are you going to climb next? All the very best; you deserve it.
Cheers
Dave
