J'ai fait le sommet.... I summited...
Bonjour a vous tous...
Hi everyone...
Wow! Quel beau trip et trek! On a super bien mange. On avait chacun notre tente.
I’m doing fine. I’m currently in Arusha after 7 days in the mountain. We got back here yesterday (Tuesday, june 5th) from Kilimanjaro. Wow! What an amazing trip and trek! We had good food. We had a tent of our own. The porters would bring hot tea and hot water for washing in the morning as they were waking us up. The first 3 days, it rained. We were soaking wet and nothing would dry, since it was too humid. Lucky me, I had those dry sacks to keep my sleeping bag and down jacket dry. Those items stayed dry the whole trip.
Trouvez l'erreur!!!!
We went up and down everyday for a good acclimatization. The itinerary was well made. We went up by Shira route. I first said on the web site that we would go by Machame route. I was wrong. We first started by Shira, in Londorossi gate and then on the third day, this route meets with Machame. There was not a lot of people on the mountain. That is better like this. We had a big team of about 40 people taking care of us: porters, porter-waiters, cooks, assistant-guides and 2 guides, plus Magali, the guide from Quebec. Those people are working as hell. They work relentlessly. We leave in the morning after breakfast, while those guys put the camp down, leave after us, get to us, pass us, get to the other camp, put up the camp, cook the meal, and when we get there, diner is ready… We do this wearing our nice technical boots, hiking poles and rain gear… They do it wearing thongs almost, with 100 pounds on their back… Find the error!!!
Here are the ascents and camps we slept in throughout the trip:
Day 1, Shira I = 3500 metres (3 hours walking under the rain…)
Day 2, Shira II = 3840 metres (4 hours walking under the rain…)
Day 3, Barranco = 3972 metres (during the day, we climbed Lava Tower 4645 metres, 9 hours walking under rain, slush, snow, cold…)
Day 4, Karanga = 4000 metres (during the day, we climbed up to 4400 metres, 5 hours walking with a hell of a climb to start the day… "breakfast wall", sunny)
Day 5, Barafu = 4600 metres (5 hours walking, really steep, sunny)
Jour 6, Sommet du Kilimanjaro = 5895 metres, redescente a Barafu = 4600 metres et redescente a Mweka camp = 3100 metres. (16 heures de marche, belle nuit, beau matin, belle journee...)
Day 6, Summit of Kilimanjaro = 5895 metres, going down to Barafu = 4600 metres and going down again to Mweka camp = 3100 metres. (16 hours walking, beautiful night , morning and day...)
Day 7, Back to Arusha = 1400 metres (3 hours walking, cloudy and humid, triopical forest)
Every night, we would sleep at an altitude of approximatly 4000 meters and during the days, we would climb up to 4200, 4400 and 4600 meters. So, when we finally made it to Barafu camp, at 4600 meters before the final ascent, I was feeling really good. I was well acclimatized, I drank plenty of water, I ate a lot and I was not sick (nausea and/or diharrea)
That was in those nice conditions that I got to the last camp (Barafu) on Sunday, june 3rd at noon. We took a nap in the afternoon, had diner, took another nap after diner and got awaken at 10h30 pm. We got prepared and left for the summit at 11h30 pm (june 3rd).
On venait d'atteindre a peu pres 5400 metres.
The night was amazing, with clear moonlight. We practically didn’t need our headlamps. Around 5 am though, I hit the wall. Everything went well up to that time, but then I started to feel dizzy, having head aches, etc… I had just passed the altitude of 5400 meters. It was really hard, it wouldn’t go away, I was so tired, I would sleep while walking, I was walking as if I were drunk. I was afraid that Magali (our guide) would turn me around, but at the same time, I couldn’t pretend having no symptoms. I was afraid that I would not realize if my state would deteriorate.
Finally, after 2 hours, I stopped, cried all the tears I had in me and talked to myself. I was thinking that it was only for one night, just a short amount of time and that it would be all over soon. I thought about what Gino would tell me if he were there… He would tell me not to give up, that it hurts, but it will pass…
J'ai pense a tous ceux que j'aime et je me suis rappele mes principes AA, "One step at a time"...
I also thought about the sick children that would trade place with me for just one night of suffering instead of a whole treatment that last for long. I thought about all the people I love and I reminded myself with all the AA principles, “One step at a time”… I thought about the willpower and strength that helped me in different situations throughout my life…
I finally found the strength and the courage to keep going… It worked! I summited on Monday, june 4th, at 8h30 am (local time). In Quebec, it was 1h30 am in the night from Sunday to Monday. It was soooo nice, it was sunny, we could see the glaciers, we were walking on a ridge and there were snow all around… It was impressing! I can’t wait to put some pictures on the web site…
Then we came down to Barafu camp, we got there at 11h30 am (it took us 9 hours to climb up and 2h30 to come down…). We had a bite, took a nap and went back down again for 4 hours. It was a big day, but how can I tell you how proud I am!!! We came down again for another day and got here in Arusha yesterday (Tuesday, june 5th) during the afternoon.
Today, june 6th, it’s shopping, laundry, phone and internet day, in Arusha. Tonight, we are going for diner in a chinese restaurant and tomorrow, we’re heading off for the safari, for another 6 days. I won’t probably be able to update the site as I will be in the savana. I will post again when I get back…
That’s it for today, I’m doing fine, I feel in great shape, I talked with Gino and Kaly on the phone today. I was so happy to hear their voice… Slowly, it’s sinking down inside of me, what I just realized. I still can’t believe that I made it to the top of KILIMANJARO!!!
I’m thinking of you and hope to read you...

A lot of effort and difficulty overcome in critical moment one step at a time, thank you for the reminder of what is most helpful to remember for me as well. Hope that you see and hear some interesting bird songs on the safari and that the weather is fine.

Visitor — Wed, 06/06/2007 - 22:13Fantastic story and it goes to show what you are capable of!!!!!! Let this be the first of many successes!!
Was there any gear that you didn't take that you would have liked to have had with you? How cold was it while climbing on summit night? How long did you spend at the summit? How did others in the climbing group cope with the altitude?
Looking forward to hearing more of the climb. Enjoy the safari.

Hi Liz !
aeronik — Thu, 06/14/2007 - 12:16Concerning your different questions, actually there's nothing I guess I should have brought that I didn't bring and I don't think I missed something either. I really had the minimum, wearing the same clothes everyday. Though I made sure I always had a dry kit (a second item of almost everything, just in case it got wet).
The thing I had that I was mostly proud of, were my dry sacks (waterproof bags), because it rained for 3 days and everything would have been soaking wet. My down jacket and my sleeping bag were always stored in those bags. Since I was not carrying my stuff, except for my day pack, it was important that it was really waterproof. Maybe one little thing I should have brought extra, a little rag to wipe off my tent floor. I had to use my towel at one point and then I didn't have anything else to wipe off my face in the morning.
About the weather, you should know that it can get really cold at night on the Kilimanjaro ascent, especially around 4 or 5 in the morning, close to minus 20 celcius. For us, the night was not that bad. It went down to maybe -10 or -15, but since we are walking at a turtle pace, it's like standing up in the cold waiting for the bus and not really moving, so my feet were cold at one point, but I had toe warmers and I also wrapped my feet with pieces of thermal blanket that I cut (kind of foil paper). So I was OK. Maybe because I come from a cold country (we have big winters in Quebec), I'm used to the cold. The rest of my body was covered in different layers (onion style).
We spent 30 minutes on the summit taking pictures and little films and embracing the magnificience of the view... After that we had to go down because it was getting late (around 9am) and the snow was becoming soft. We also had a long descent ahead of us.
The people who summited with me seemed to be doing fine with altitude. I was feeling a bit dizzy and so were the others, but I did not have any particular headaches after I started to feel better. Those who had problems had turned around earlier. One of the men had turned around early because he really had bad headaches and one of the girls kept on vomiting and had to stop every few minutes on the ascent so she decided to quit realizing she couldn't make it.
That's it for now. I hope it answers your questions. Feel free to ask me other stuff that I might have forgotten and that you might be interested in.
Thanks for reading,

Hi Aeronik, Thanks for the
Visitor — Sat, 06/16/2007 - 01:06Hi Aeronik,
Thanks for the reply. We have used dry sacks before on walks in New Zealand and found them invaluable. We also use a large dry sack in our day packs as a pack liner and find this works well.
The photos of summit night look fantastic.
I looked at your gear list and noted the 17kilo total weight for everything you took. What weight did you have to carry each day in your day pack? On summit night, what layered clothing did you wear?
Looking forward to seeing some photos of your safari.
Thanks for sharing your story.
